The GonMad Cumbrian Dictionary & Phrase Book

What a wonderful comprehensive insight into the Dialect Dictionary. As a Cumbrian (Carlisle) I did wonder if the dictionary would cover any of the Carlisle words and expressions, such as the infamous "eh?", meaning "understand?", but yes, there is a very good coverage, as there is over the whole of the county. One word I couldn't find "ingin" as in "ingin the weshin' oot", (hanging the washing out). Note the "h" is dropped - again common practice. I laughed my way through all the "yat lowpin" and would recommend this read to anyone with an interest in dialects or natives of this part of the world.

What a laugh - many of these words are still used today all around Cumbria. Bought a couple as pressies and the comments have been brilliant. Also told other friends about this book and many of them also bought and again the comments have been brilliant. Pick it up to have a chuckle if you're sick of the weather outside - it'll soon cheer you up. Superb !!!!!!!

Bought this for our son-in-law for Christmas. He hails from Glasgow, married our daughter who is a true Cumbrian and moved down here to be her. It's been educational for him, particularly as he now works with Cumbrians! He's now understanding certain phrases, however it's been a 2-way street as we have learned some Glaswegian phrases from him!

The great Doctor Johnson could not have done better. I laughed out loud at some of the explanations of Cumbrian dialect in this little book. Dan Gibson is sech a gran fella, eh and has a wry way with words. I live in Cumbria but am an off-comer of 45 years, it has given me great pleasure to be able to now decipher what my naighbours are talking about.

loved this book great fun had a real laugh with some of the sayings we have cumbrian friends so great to know what they are saying especially my husband as he is about as cockney as you get

Being from Cumbria then moving away decades ago, I bought this for my son. I peeked in to check it and ended up reading it from cover to cover, being reminded of all the things we used to say that nobody in the rest of the country understands including my children. I sometimes wondered if I'd got the words wrong but was relieved to see them in writing. I'm not going senile after all 😁
