Absolute must-read manga
When I first received a copy of volume 1 from the library (after reading reviews on [...]), I was hesitant to read it, because I thought Ryuku (on cover) looked so disturbing. I flipped through and thought, 'no way will I enjoy this -- he's too creepy and the art is not he typical "anime style" that I am used to.' So I decided to give it 3 chapters -- could not put it down. Was so engrossed I just kept going. Bypassed the library entirely and ordered the first four volumes on amazon.com.I have been trying for years to get my husband as into anime as I am. I'm an old-school anime/manga fan, and am now absolutely thrilled to pass my love for it onto my kids. Anyway, I told him, "Honey, you HAVE to read this." He looked at it, thought it looked bizarre and started to hand it back to me. "No, you HAVE to read it. Just give it 3 chapters, and I guarantee you'll be hooked." He was. We're now toting the tankoban all over with us...while we're waiting during kids' dance or martial arts lessons. I am a firm believer in: if you love something as a kid (manga, video games, whatever), there's absolutely no reason you should give it up as an adult.I am amazed at the unique quality of both the story and the illustrations. It is such a thrilling book of cat and mouse and one-upmanship. I have rarely been so engrossed. The Shinigami are a tad disturbing-looking, but they have a friendly sort of quality about them that makes them almost sweet.I am actually going to pass these books onto my parents and let them read. I've let my father-in-law read "Maus" and he really enjoyed it...so now I think the family is ready for manga. Back in the early 90s, there was so little translated manga/anime out there. Today, there is just a plethora of titles available, and I'm thrilled. If you have any doubts, or you're curious, give this title a read. It's really stellar.

Very Good Manga
The setup for Death Note is that a spirit or death god dropped his notebook with instructions for use in the human world. He did this out of boredom to see what would happen. A human can use the notebook to cause the deaths of other humans. I bought Death Note after reading a preview in a magazine. It is about as interesting as I suspected it would be. It has become more a detective story than a supernatural event story. So far enough mystery is being maintained that I want to read more. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because, as in many mystery or detective stories, some things are being deliberately held back from the reader so that there is a surprise later. That's the nature of such stories. I just find it a little gimmicky. Still, it's not so annoying that I am ready to give up on the "game." At some point I might give up on it if I do not grow to love the characters themselves. I have not particularly warmed up to the main characters or minor characters. I recommend it for the way it plays with its concept.

Awesome story, great art
This is the best and most original mangas I have ever read. It takes the mystery murder genre to the next level. It's very interesting to read on a psychological level, where we see a young, bright, up-and-coming college student (Light Yagami) who has discovered a deathly power (the Death Notebook). With it, he thinks he can change the world for the better by making it completely crime-free, and rule the world himself; becoming like a god. Using the Death Note, Light begins killing the world's worst criminals simply by writing down their names. His plans go awry when the INTERPOL (the international police orginization)--which finally realizes that all these criminals dying of heart attacks can't be a coincidence--sets the greatest detective in the world on his case--a detective whose identity is a complete mystery. He only goes by the alias "L".Light Yagami gets desperate, and instead of using what he thinks are "just" means to accomplish his "righteous" intentions, he becomes ruthless and amoral, until he is no longer fighting for his ideal world, but only fighting to keep himself from falling into the hands of the law. This is what happens when simple men take on too much power, and think they can handle it best. It's full of mystery, suspense, a bit of the supernatural, and sometimes humor (Ryuuk, ftw!). The art is very well done.I highly recommend it.

ARE FUN!!」でした笑
