Q: Do these stand up by themselves? Or do they need to be propped up against something?

They stand upright, no need for prop.

Q: Cam these figurines be bent into a sitting position?

We are enjoying them very much. In fact they are on display in our home daily. Sorry though but their legs do not bend at all. I think there might be wooden dowels inside to make them stand up all the time. I hope I was helpful.
