The best in the world!
Though I have not received this product yet, I have watch many-many videos on the this simulator. What I have to say is, this is hands-down the most realistic train simulator I have ever seen. You can do anything a real train engineer can do, from controlling train speed, horn, track changes, etc... This is the REAL deal! You have a choice of steam, diesel or electric trains, you can even take the controls of an AMTRAK train! The best part of this simulator is, you can create tracks and landscapes to explore and increase the excitement by creating custom trains. This simulator is not a game of sorts because its not recommended for anyone looking to race or crash. Some of the missions can take up to 30 minutes to complete. Remember the most important fact about this simulator is that this is REAL. You are in control of the locomotive and all the intricate responsibilities associated with the safe operations of the entire train. It's not all seriousness here, this simulator has a "free roam" mode also where you can do anything you want... try not to derail your train or disobey the speed limit, this will mean automatic "end of simulation." Bottom line is: THIS IS THE BEST SIMULATOR AVAILABLE!"I can't wait for this to arrive!"

Unable to load the program, it stops to load ...
Unable to load the program, it stops to load something from "Steam" from the internet which is no longer online so the program does not complete loading. Appears to be trying to load an updated version which is no longer available.

A (usually) relaxing alternative to action games
I got Train Simulator 2012 because one, I've always liked trains (had model trains when I was a youngster) and, two, I wanted a peaceful game to counter-balance the normally violent FPSs and RPGs I play. I'm happy to report I got both. Yes, the game requires a constant internet connection and Steam. However, there are advantages to Steam like automatic updates, quick access to mods, DLCs, etc.Train Simulator was a little confusing in the beginning, though there is a tutorial, it took me a bit to figure out the track switching required to unload and load freight cars and guide your train onto the proper tracks. There were also new terms to learn like "siding" (side tracks were stationary freight cars sit) and "rake" (a group of connected freight cars) which I found fascinating. Once I got through the tutorials, I was happily uncoupling and coupling freight cars and delivering them to their destinations. It was also interesting to learn how to operate locomotives. Though Train Simulator 2012 has simple controls for the novice, I soon switched to expert mode that has the same controls as real engines. I learned that these controls need to be fine tuned to navigate your trains up and down hills, and in yards, and trains don't stop on a dime! Especially one that's hauling a bunch of cement cars! You can switch to an interior view of the locomotive and operate the real life controls inside the cabin or listen to messages on your CB radio, though they do repeat and are the same regardless of which train you choose (one of the first mods I'm going to look for is an expansion for the CB banter). There are several other exterior views including "helicopter" (from above) and bypass, where you watch your train from a view of someone standing on the side of the tracks. There is a plethora of different routes from various locations in the US and Europe, where you can choose to pickup passengers or freight, or you can choose a specific engine to drive whether steam, electric, even old coal burners! It's obvious great care was taken when rendering the trains and they are a joy to look at, though the landscape suffers graphically. Switching to free camera and roaming around reveals blocky graphics or grazing cows frozen in one position, though there are vehicles traversing the roads and highways, no people are seen except when loading and unloading passengers. But this is a minor complaint compared to the realism of the trains themselves.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY AGAIN!!!
I tried to install my program. I found that I could not install it until I went to a third-party site and created an account. That process took well over an hour because of mainly the downloads that the site required. When I was finally cleared to install from my disk the download took a couple of minutes. I received notice that included "Play Game" as the first choice. When I clicked on that button I was notified that updates were to be installed and the process started immediately. The message window said that the download was the 2014 version of the program - not something I asked for or wanted at that point. Are you sitting? The message window also informed me that the download would take over 3 hours. What could I do but let it run, and run, and run.... Finally, about 3 hours later the download was still in progress and still indicating hours remaining. Rather than put my foot through the screen I wrote to the Railworks site and complained about their crappy software. Then I turned the computer of and went downstairs for dinner and a flick.I woke up during the night (3:00) and decided to see if I could try again to install the program. What I found was the message window. Apparently the download had continued after I turned off the computer. The progress bar in the window had 11 small bars and the time remaining to complete was - 2 hours and 27 minutes. After practicing my sailor vocabulary for several minutes I went back to bed, leaving the thing running. I woke up at 8:00 and went in to check on the progress. At 8:15 there were 13 small bars in the progress window and the time to completion had changed to 3 hours and 42 minutes.I had contacted the Railworks site but received a reply from another company that I had never heard of, Dove Tail Games. Their answer was that the download speed was controlled by my internet connection and that I could take my problem to another company
