What are you on about...
Look, I never really review, infact i'm not sure I ever have on amazon, but ive been reading the reviews on this and they are absolutely terrible. I went to see this in the cinema, and thoroughly enjoyed the film, Im 17 and not a huge film boffin, but I can understand the direction Ridley was trying to take with this, he created a detailed look at one of the most fascinating (in my mind) characters of our childhood, which really has never been truely represented in a film. I believe that the reason why so many people are slating this film is because of the absence of "action" in the majority of the film. Honestly, this is one of the only films that i did not mind watching the character grow as the story went along, a bit like the "Cinderella man", another Crowe film. The progression that the film takes was far too distracting for me and the overall lack of fight scenes and battles went completely unnoticed to me. The banter between Crowe and Blanchett was nothing to make me roar with laughter but enough to allow me to chuckle guilt free. When the combat does show its head in this film it hooks you in and completely captures your imagination. The special effects are brilliantly done, I really dispise block busters with huge explosions and glossy effects added in after to make them seem more thrilling for their audience. Robin Hood does a fantastic job in induldging the audience with a truely gripping sence of tension where you, yourself, feel like you are in the fight for your life, or running through the forest with arrows wizzing past your ears. But what amazed me most was its capacity to do this without making the film look like a 'glossy' hollywood movie with a million pounds spent on the effects budget. In conclusion, Robin Hood is the thinking mans tale of the old legend, it has witty banter, mixed in with excelent story line progression, character depthness is fantastic with the main man Robin himself, but could do with enhansing on the other characters such as "little john". I truly enjoyed my experience with this film, and would have hoped that more people shared my view...

Detailed and interesting, but with a clumsy ending
Ridley Scott comes with a certain expectation, of sumptuous cinematography and attention to detail.. and this movie does not disappoint. Particularly in the extended version which just makes more sense than the theatrical version. I feel part of the movies disappointment first time round in theatres, was due to a measure of mis-marketing. This is not a Robin Hood movie as such - this is a precursor, a prequel of sorts - an origin story that reimagines how such stories and myths could come about. Gone are the men in tights, gone is the jaunty humour, no more the scenes of robbing the wealthy and paying back the poor as a set up for the character. In is a historical context, a history which reaches far beyond Nottingham, and large battle scenes. Indeed, the addition of a huge D-Day style battle at the climax feels rather too over the top, and as well photographed and executed as it is, feels like a betrayal of the build up rather than a necessary dramatic high to end the movie. The movie starts with a myth busting moment - an accurate recreation of King Richard dying at the hands of the French (and a cook, at that..), which sets Robin Longstride (soon to become Robin of the Hood) off on a journey with a band of (not so merry) men, back home. At first, they are out to save their own skin and maybe accrue some wealth to ensure their future- and gradually, involved in a more altruistic fight, to quell a French plot to ignite the Baron's War. The history after Richard's death is somewhat muddled, and liberally draws on events which occurred over a longer period and shuffles them around to fit this new version of history. So we get the Magna Carta introduced years before it came about, a French invasion which never happened - or at least, not in a massive battle like this, and the Baron's war happening much earlier than it did. But putting that to the side, this is quite a compelling and imaginative story of the character, and has ambitious scope, worthy acting and as we expect from Scott, well shot throughout. Where we are let down, is the tagged on `big battle scene' and the excised humour. Even real life has more smiles than this joyless exercise. The deleted scenes give some clue that perhaps more humour was originally intended.. but as Roger Ebert suggested, it does rather make you pine for the smiling and happy Errol Flynn to carry off the darker moments with a bit more pizzazz. Special mention should go to Mark Strong as the treacherous Godfrey, and Oscar Isaac as Prince (and King) John.. they at least uphold the tradition of the villain being entertaining. As for the extended version - yes, it's long. Too long, perhaps - but its significantly better than the theatrical version. Included now are scenes which flesh out the burgeoning relationship between Robin and Marion, particularly the scenes involving the orphans running ferile in the forest, to whom they both try and reach out. The background to Robin Longstride remembering his past and its significance is also much clearer here, with the addition of just a few short moments. All in all, what was *** in the theatre has become a **** movie in this version - but still lacks the resolution and soupcon of humour that would have made it *****.

Thank You for this Extended Cut, This is now the film of 2010
I have seen this film 15 times in the cinema, I loved it and yet this, unfortunately is spoilt by the edits made. The editor needs to be shot, I lost count of the continuity errors and poor editing, some of the shots used are awfull (when godfrey stands over robin locksley, check out how many times his hands move on the stake!) also ( when russell crow rides into the village and tells the french stop or its death, points his sword, marion sees walters body and then russell crow says we have two days! how'd he work that out??!) Still The score is beautiful and carried the joys and emotions just as the gladiator one did, but if not better. Yes, the accents are a bit .. hazy in places, but I understood them and they probably could be better, but don;t forget, its only a film! The story is great and after the first showing I knew this wa terribly edited and this was demanding a directors cut, I hope to see at least 20-40 minutes restored as the editor wa a prat for cutting what he did, the film really suffered for this. This movie is an epic and should have stayed about the 3 hour mark. The support cast are excellent as in prince of theives the meery men are great. Mark Strong is the best villan of the decade, what a CV he's amassing. Sets are excellent and this film does give you that adrenal fueled gladiator vibe. I belive this is the best movie Scott has done since galdiator and Alien before that, and this is THE movie of 2010.

Superbe film que j'avait vu il y a quelques années. J'adore cette version, Marianne n'est pas une pucelle de 30 ans et Robin des bois est un homme mûr aguerri aux combats.

Many actors have portrayed Robin Hood, Erroll Flynn, Kevin Costner, Taron Egerton among others but Russell Crowe is the best in this film. Crowe is fighting with King Richard who is killed in fighting, he is returning to England, and comes upon others who have been killed, one is Robin of Nottingham who asks him to return his sword to his father and wife. He returns to Nottingham and Max Von Sydow asks him to impersonate his dead son, as his widow would lose everything with the death of his son, he does this reluctantly. On his return he returns the crown to King John. King John's mother is played by Eileen Atkins. King gives command to Mark Strong taking command from William Hurt. Strong is devious and with the French wants to overtake Britain. Mark Addy plays a monk who makes mead in the village. Strong with his gang destroys the village, kills Sydow, however Crowe rides to the rescue and saves many. Cate Blanchett is excellent as the wife of dead Robin, excellent last scenes with French and Strong landing on the beach. King John has promised to give freedom and liberty to all English people but after the victory proclaims that God has given him power and burns the freedom document. This one of the best Robin Hood film and Crowe is excellent along with Blanchett. Ridley Scott is the director and does an excellent job in this film.
