Try it
I'm a home distiller, and at first it seemed like i got the wrong product because it definetely wasn't ask dark as the picture suggested. After a fresh batch of 50% alcohol and one week in about a half a cup of these chips and iv'e got a product that tastes and smells like Jack Daniels. These chips are fantastic and worth the buy. The flavor is perfect, but depnding on the alcohol strength you may need to back sweeten. Origional review was one star until I tried them, I stand corrected and you will to unless you try it first.

Solid Setup for the Hobby Brewer
Bought this for my husband who’s recently taken up home brewing—because apparently, we needed another hobby in this house. To be fair, this setup works really well. It’s sturdy, easy to clean, and has all the basics he needs to get started. We’ve already gone through a couple of batches, and everything turned out surprisingly good (no explosions, so I’ll take it as a win). He’s obsessed, and I get to sample the results, so no complaints there. Only reason for 4 stars is that it didn’t come with the most detailed instructions, so there was a bit of YouTubing involved. Otherwise, solid product and a great gift for your aspiring backyard brewmaster.

Works like a charm!
Steeped with this chipped wood in high proof moonshine... it creates a very dark product within 3 days, after 5 days I strained off the mix and filtered the product through a coffee filter... it made a better whiskey than most that you will purchase at a high price after I age the final product for about a month in a dark place, undisturbed. I had friends do a blind taste test using Jack Daniels black label, Jim Bean Double Aged, Wild Turkey 101, Markers Mark and this wood steeped product...they all picked the steeped wood product over them all. How I did it: I took about 1 1/2 cup dry measure of the chipped wood, washed it clean of dirt, etc with cold water... dried it out, Added the measure to a quart Mason jar, and added the moonshine to the jar stopping when the wood floated to the top of the rim, closed the jar, shook it, opened back up the jar and added more shine to it to the top, then stowed in in my pantry where there is no light. I checked the mixed once a day(never shake) with a sip until I like how it tasted which started to become great at 3 days at 5 days I was liking it very much, so I took the product and strained it, adding it back to the jar, I stowed it for a month, check the taste w a sip every other day. It seems to begin to mellow and began to have a superior taste that I can firmly say reminds me of ten year aged Eagle Rare 101. Im guessing if you like good whiskeys, you should try this w marketed moonshine, as it'll probably turn out similar to my product. Have fun! You're welcome!

Great for the spirits
These dark oak chips were just what I was looking for and they work great! Mm-hmm I add these dark wood chips to my distilled spirits and put away in a dark space for a few months. This really Mellows out whatever you're Brewing. They turn the distillate a pleasing amber color as if it was aged in a chard Oak Barrel.

Ridiculous
Not dark oak again! I have ordered this product numerous times. The last three orders have not been dark oak at all. They are light oak at best and look bothing like the picture. This is very frustrating and just wrong. My complaints are ignored time and time again. It seems like they just throw whatever they have in a bag and ship it off without concern.

Colored the spirit red
When added to a clear spirit it quickly, within minutes, turned the spirit a very reddish brown color that is pink on dilution. The color appeared so quickly I thought the chips were dosed with a dye. It did not seem natural. I’d call it suspicious and disappointing. After filtering off the chips, though, I saved the product for two years. The flavor and nose seemed to mature, with smoke and vanilla notes and the initial pink color mellowed to a reddish amber stored in glass jars. Used the 1-lb bag in 3 gallons of spirit. In the end, satisfied, so ordering another bag.
