The Phantom Tollbooth [Remaster]

Made in the 1970's!
Purchased this movie to watch with my 8th grade class after we read the book and wrote essays. The movie begins with a real life Milo living his real "boring" life - once he goes into the tollbooth, the movie becomes animated while he adventures into the imaginary kingdom. Follows the book reasonably well - different enough to provide good discussion points after the show.

Great Movie
This is just what we wanted, and my son loves the movie it reminds him of his Nana that would read the book to him.

Quality
I felt that the video had good quality for such an older film. My students really enjoyed watching this movie after reading the book.

its an ok movie,
This is an ok movie, but it does not follow the book very closely. It leaves a lot out and frankly feels rushed.

Pretty Faithful to the book
We read the book and since there was a movie adaptation we bought this and it’s pretty solid an adaptation. Not as good as the princes bride book adaptation but good. They hit the major grammar jokes but there are a fair bit more in the book. If you’ve read the book it’s worth the watch if you’ve not read the book first you’re missing some context but it’s otherwise a fine movie.

If you read the book first; I'm sorry.
Okay, look: I get that for those of you who "read the book soon after its release", this movie was a dire disappointment. I feel that you've been poorly served. I went the other way with this. I saw the movie FIRST, then read the book. I watched this film two decades ago. (plus a few years) Loved it more than you could imagine. As a teen, I wouldn't have been the intended audience, but I thought it was the best kids movie I had ever seen. I tried for a long time to find another copy of this movie, and at the time there was nowhere to find it. I finally bought the last copy from the SunCoast warehouse (to the chagrin of the store clerk) in VHS, and was satisfied. In 2009, my wife bought me the book as a birthday gift. I was floored. Not only was the gift thoughtful, but the book was amazing. There was so much more than in the movie. More adventures, more educational value, more everything. This did not, in any way, diminish my love for the movie. It only gave me another format to love. In conclusion: If you purchase this movie looking for some portal back to your childhood memories of a book, you will be sorely disappointed. Your memories are better than the book ever was. No film will ever stand up to them. If you haven't read the book: This movie is a spectacular jumping off point. 1970 animation and style, done by the animation superstars of the time. Great voice work, and nigh psychedelic backdrops are the order of the day. Enjoy this film to the fullest. Then buy the book. It will be even better with the introduction. My 2¢.

One of the Best !
I have always loved this movie. For a few decades, I have kept a Beta max copy, of this Movie. I find myself pulling out the old Beta Player, and running through movies and shows from yesteryear. When I found that it was finally converted to DvD I was amazed and very Grateful. The copy I bought, I passed on to my friends 5 year old son. It was a great Christmas gift, and getting to tease him about getting stuck in the Dulldrums, was very enjoyable. We now get to tease his dad, he has not watched this great film. The animation is subperb, the songs still go with the Movie, and the characters are are Great. I still love watching the Dali moment when they get down from an over look, bye riding a Clock Stretching down. The theme is a fun introduction to edifying and education. The battle of two brothers, one is about words, the other is about numbers, yet by themselves they cannot rule their kingdom.I probably should mention that I have never met a kid that did not enjoy, or love this Movie. So, get a copy...........................before you get stuck , in the Dulldrums ! ! !

A Classic Colourful Film From A Long Ago Era in the Same Genre as Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland
A Great Little Gem of late 1960's dual live-action/animated Film, with a bubbly musical soundtrack in parts and starring a young Butch Patrick (from the 60's TV series The Munsters). The story has an intelligent allegorical message for children in the same genre as the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, but starring a boy instead of a girl as the leading actor and protagonist. Totally underestimated and almost forgotten (the original 1961 best-selling book is far more well known), thus only released as a MOD-DVD (Manufactured On Demand) from the Warner Home Video back catalogue. Despite the film's moderate box office success and delaying of its release (being December 1972 in the UK four years after filming began in 1968!), the film has voice overs from various big stars of its day (Mel Blanc-Looney Tunes and Daws Butler-Yogi Bear). A film remake is finally in the pipeline from Warner Bros, long overdue, it should be fantastic and like the original recommended to uplift children and the family.
