Deep & Impactful
This was a refreshing read and it stood out from the slew of overly feminist self help books that I’ve previously read. Hooks never minces her words. She calls a spade, a spade ever so often. There were so many of my long-standing beliefs that I was forced to question over the course of reading this book. While many seemed to be well meaning to me, when I dug a little deeper, I realised the origins of them were not always so saintly. The best part about Hooks’ writing is that she digs deep, deeper than others. She unearths the ugly. It’s not always easy to digest and there are parts of the book that I still don’t fully agree with. But the lens with which she makes you look at the society and it’s notions is unique. This is by no means a fun or light read. It really makes you think and probe into the deepest recesses of your ideologies. You will take time to read this one, stopping once, twice, multiple times to take it all in.
