It creates the fresh air smell by creating O3 and the ionizer sends negative ions into the air to remove particles of dust and pollens from the air. It also has a UV light to kill bacteria. It compares to the Ecoquest which I also have, but this one has more filters including a hepa and a carbon filter. I have had no c Problems with it for the 6 years I have had it. The Ecoquest was way more pricey, but broke down more often. The control panel on the Grele has more options as well. Very good product, I am sorry it is no longer available. It was economically priced also. I just need to contact the manufacturer to find out how to remove the grill to clean the fan. The manual has no contact information.
