A respectable understudy to the mighty Lavazza
We usually stick to Lavazza Rossa — a long-standing member of the household and frankly the only reason we’re even vaguely civil before 9 a.m. However, thanks to the joys of Subscribe & Save (and my inability to plan ahead), I found myself staring into the abyss of an empty coffee tin. Enter this contender, bought as a temporary stand-in. And you know what? It’s actually rather good. Dark, intense, and satisfyingly strong, without any of that sharp acidity that makes you question your life choices. It’s not quite Lavazza — more like its second cousin who turns up uninvited but ends up being quite good company. All in all, a very decent brew for a very decent price. It’s earned a spot on the shelf — perhaps not front row, but certainly not banished to the back either.

a damned good coffee!
Okay, let's start with addressing what others have said. When I opened this intenso, it did not smell like fish; it smelled like coffee. On a deep breath in, at the end, there is something a little different, but it's definitely NOT fishy, the smell is basically coffee, we use a mokka pot, and the grind size was perfect for this application, just right in fact. The coffee that it made was damn good, just a good coffee. We've been spending too much money trying out many different brands of coffee, so the main reason for trying this is the price, and needing to find a simple coffee to keep buying over and over that all of us enjoy. Taste-wise, the most important thing is that there is no bitterness; it's just smooth, all the way down, just as smooth as Taylor's of Harrogate lazy Sunday, and equally as smooth as Marley One Love coffee. I didn't try this Intenso coffee neat, I just went straight in with the cream and sweetener, so YMMV with an espresso Definitely a number 4 strength, best of both worlds, plenty of coffee in a single brick, at least four mokka pots' worth, sixteen mokka pots for 13.99, yes please! get some any try it yourself, we started with the intenso to see how strong it is, but we prefer a medium coffee overall just add lesscrean, and sweetner if we fancy a stronger coffee on that day, don't see any need to try the crema now, simply stick with the intenso, worth noting that this is rainforest alliance coffee, a lot aren't

Stronger when brewed than expected but has a strange fragrance when first opened
Of several previous purchases from the 'Happy Belly' range, most were proven to be of excellent value and quality as well as to taste (only one was considered unpleasant) but that can happen with any product and at any time. 'Happy Belly Caffe Intenso' is the first ground coffee to be purchased from the brand. Rated with a strength rating of 4, and apparently equal to that intended to be purchased but not then in stock. When delivered, the use-by date was approximately 18 months later and it will be used well before expiry approaches. Unlike some which are loosely vacuum-packed, with a CO2 release valve in the bag, thse are 'bricked', tightly packed and solid until opened; there is no CO2 release. Pricing was also remarkably low (4 x 250g packs). As a relative newcomer to using a filter machine at home (one was used in workplaces but the choice of coffee was then never personal), experience thus far in selecting whatever is available and hopefully to taste is that strength, flavour, bitterness and other such characteristics can and will vary with the brand; one may be rated 3 by one and 4 or 5 by another yet they are very similar blends, roasts etc. The grind is stated on the pack as 'medium' and to be ideal for use in cafeterieres, filter and Moka machines; it is a filter machine for which it is required. By comparison with other medium-ground coffees, this is by some way the finest grind of all. The fragrance of the coffee when first opened was not as expected and had a strange, almost fishy, character. Were it sold in a specialist coffee roast and grind shop, that characteristic alone would likely cause it to be ignored. As it is tightly-packed in foil and well-sealed, there can be no external causative influence. Flavour, once brewed, and based upon the usual two tablespoons-plus per 250 ml cup as generally recommended, was flavourful, pleasant and its strength slightly greater than a true 4 but with none of the strange character of the dry product! It is likely that the quantity used will be reduced to two level tablespoons per cup for the cups usually used, and one per cup for the smaller 125 ml shot cups. Addendum - for a minor medical issue, it has been suggested to see whether a decaffeinated product would help resolve it and Happy belly Decaffeinated since purchased - the flavour is good and without the usual 'acidic' character.

Not as good as bean
You might think, how on earth can a coffee this cheap be any good? Well, be surprised because it is! I took a gamble on it myself, I prefer a full bodied strong black coffee first thing in the morning. I can't be bothered with fruit flavoured coffee's although some of them aren't bad. For me and my wife this hits the spot! Use 1 tablespoon per medium sized mug and enjoy a smooth rich, sobering mouthful of black nectar on the patio, letting it slip down your throat like silk, with an aroma on your pallet that takes you to another place. Some people reviewing this have said it's rubbish, I totally disagree, by the fact that stock is now unavailable is surely testimony to the excellent coffee this is. But if you have had a bad experience that it doesn't taste strong at all then I suggest you put more powder in, if it's then way too strong (like an Espresso) just add hot water. IMO the biggest mistake about making coffee the right strength is when the powder quantity isn't right. Sometimes it's worth a bit of trial and error to get it right. We had this on repeat order but sadly due to stock issue we have had to opt for another at the moment. Hopefully Amazon will find more soon. Excellent coffee Amazon thank you and as a bonus coffee farmers benefit from the purchase. Update 14/3/21: switched to the beans due to no stock which I must say are far better than whatever this is now. Not sure what they have done but I've taken 2 stars off the rating as drunk black it is really bitter, okay with milk though. The bean version if you have a grinder is far superior even drunk black, so smooth and rich, easily a 5*

This is my coffee of choice. The cheapest and best I could find around. This coffee gives a great taste. In addition to this coffee, I use paper filters. It comes in 4 packs of 250g, so 1kg, which, depending on your drinking, can last you a while.
