Excellent source of reference
I am a bit of a WWII nut. I build a lot of models, have quite a few Shermans and their variants in my collection so I have amassed a pretty decent library of books on Shermans. Honestly, after skimming through this after it came to the house it probably doesn't have much information that I don't already have in the other books but that being said, if you are just looking for a really good basic knowledge of the M4 Sherman, it's history and development and some great archival photos as well as pictures of currently owned and restored tanks then you can't beat this for the price and quality. I definitely recommend this if you have nothing on the subject in your library or if you (think you) have everything!

Bought this for the ex. He was a tanker in the army, so I thought I'd give him something of historical value. He was like a kid on Christmas morning when I gave it to him. It looked over it a couple times, and it was great to see all the cool machines, and how they were built.

Pretty average effort from Haynes
Having purchased the excellent Haynes manuals on the Tiger, Churchill, and Mk IV tanks, I found this one a bit lacking in places. Although it adheres to the same format and covers much the same the ground as those books, the overall level of detail isn't quite as good. It's nicely presented and includes a number of excellent diagrams, tables, and photographs, but tries to hard to be a Jack of all trades, and ends up failing to be a focused, detailed technical study of the M4. I've noticed Haynes' books on American vehicles tend to be their weaker ones, and this is no exception. At $16, this is a pretty decent introduction to the Sherman, and there's quite a bit of interesting technical detail within. The photographs of some oddball M4 variants are probably the most interesting part, as are the sections on owning, restoring, and maintaining your own Sherman. Still, I expect better from Haynes, and some input from the staff at the Tank Museum in Bovington would have probably helped immensely.

A fun book, worth the price.
Last week I got a copy of Haynes "M4 Sherman Tank Owners' Workshop Manual" by Pat Ware. The book is designed to look like part of the popular "Haynes" series of auto repair books, which is a fun if somewhat gimmicky marketing ploy. The book is not an actual repair or maintenance manual in the proper sense, but it does include some fairly detailed diagrams of the various systems in a Sherman Tank. The first half of the book details the history and development of the Sherman tank. To anyone that is already familiar with this story, this part of the book will not be particularly interesting. Owners of Zaloga's "Armored Thunderbolt" or Hunnicutt's "Sherman: A History of the American Medium Tank" will not learn much new here. However, the book does have some very nice charts listing the various M4 variants and models. Sometimes the author falls a little too in line with the traditional criticisms and myths regarding the M4, echoes of Belton Cooper can be heard in the text. The second half of the book is the more interesting. Fairly good descriptions of the various M4 power packs are given, with more detail that most books on AFVs devote to engines. Also, there is a nice section with details on each of the manufacturing locations for the M4. Various illustrations are included detailing the interior systems of the M4. The final section of the book is about actually owning and maintaining a Sherman tank. This part is rather entertaining, but probably not of much use to the average tank enthusiast, unless they have a half million dollars with which to purchase a Sherman tank. All in all, it's an interesting read with enough good charts, photos and illustrations to make it worth the $18 that it's offered for on Amazon. And of course, its fun to show off to friends who are familiar with the Haynes series of repair manuals. It looks nice sitting on the shelf next to my copy of the Haynes manual for the Tiger tank.

Icon explained
Most of what I always wanted to know about the Sherman is shown, and to the layman, always seeing just the outside, this is a most revealing book, even if you don't want owing one, because making the money to buy one, and maintain, is not included.

Great tank, great book!
Very good coverage of the various marks (including our own Canadian Grizzly). Perhaps more on the mechanicals (though engines well covered) would have been appreciated
