A remarkable instrument
This drum speaks with minimal effort. It is loud and authoritative and it was in nearly perfect tune out of the box. It is exceptionally responsive. It looks very cool! The Skyndeep head and Acousticon shell give it a ring reminiscent of a dumbek. It can be tuned precisely. The materials keep the instrument stable making it a great choice for performance. This alone was a big factor in choosing it over a traditional drum.I purchased a Toca djembe stand to play it seated.Highly recommended for the performing percussionist. Big fun!

THE do it all hand drum
It is amazing just how versatile a djembe(pronounced JEM-bay) drum is. You can make so many different and varied sounds on a djembe. I love the REMO Mondo Djembe and it is a great price through Amazon with super fast free shipping with for Prime members. This is a great djembe if you want to purchase one online because the REMO Mondo Djembe is very consistent unlike a traditional wooden djembe. Every wooden djembe is a unique drum and no two sound or play exactly the same, making it risky to purchase online. The REMO Mondo Djembe is very popular because it has rich tones, is well engineered to be easy to play, and is very durable. It also has good resale value. I bought this new on Amazon for only a couple dollars more than my local drum shop was selling a used one. The construction allows it to take a real beating and still look great. It is especially good for use on tour, outside, or in drum circles because it is not affected by temperature and humidity like the wooden ones are. You can leave it worry free in your car trunk on the hottest summer day and even keep playing outside if it starts to rain. You wouldn't want to play a wooden djembe with a goat skin in the rain. The REMO Mondo Djembe's synthetic skin head looks and feels very much like real goat skin, but you don't have to deal with the mass of ropes loosening and tightening in response to heat, moisture, or whatever other mystery forces seem to constantly affect the tuning. The key tuning makes it easy to tune on the rare occasion, and greatly aids in keeping it tuned. It has a rubber bottom to protect the shell from impacts and protect floors. I really like the way the top edge is angled to protect your hands. This is a great drum for beginners who are sure they will continue playing after the novelty wears off because you can make some good sounds fairly quickly and still be very content with this drum much later on as you slowly master it.I made one modification to the drum because the synthetic skin audibly rings more than a goat skin. After much experimentation, I found that a 4.25" strip of duct tape applied to the inside of the head to reduce ringing sounded best to me. Depending on which head your drum has, you can just slightly see the shadow of the tape through the head and it is less noticeable to me when placed directly behind the REMO label. If you want to play drums with someone who plays a 14" djembe then you might want to consider getting a larger or smaller one to add more character to the mix. Mine is this 14" Kintekloth djembe, which I believe is a good compromise with a lot of bass similar to a 16" but still being somewhat easy to carry like a 12" and with almost the same sharpness of high tones that a 12" has. The 16" drum sounds huge with loads of bass and the 12" is really light and easy to carry with sharper high tones. Here is a 12" REMO Djembe, MONDO(TM), Designer Series, Key-Tuned, 12" x 24", SKYNDEEP®, Contour Tuning Brackets, Adinkra FinishHere is a 16" REMO Djembe, MONDO(TM), Key-Tuned, 16" x 27", SKYNDEEP® FIBERSKYN®, Black, Contour Tuning Brackets, Black Earth FinishFor those of you who want to go over the top, here is a huge 18" monster that will rock the house with super thundering bass. If you put this just the right distance from the floor to get a little bass gain, and hit it just right, you will easily compete with all but the loudest home stereo systems. I found that resting the front corner on a wood floor and tilting the back edge down, starting at about 4" above the floor, until the pitch just starts to go down gives a slightly muted but thundering bass not unlike a heavy metal bass drum. This thing would be seriously intimidating to anyone near you playing a 12" djembe in a drum circle: REMO Djembe, MONDO(TM), Key-Tuned, 18" x 28", SKYNDEEP® FIBERSKYN®, Contour Tuning Brackets, Kintekloth Finish

Perfect for beginner or a pro
Our church has a 16" Remo with the Acousticon Shell So that's the only brand I had played up close before. Its a great Drum but over $300 with a stand. My 10 year old son (who has been playing regular drums for about a year) liked the one at church and decided he wanted wanted to learn to play Djembe so he could play with the church praise band. The 12" was the perfect size for him and got it really better sharp and mid-range tones than the larger Remo, which is more expensive than this model. He played his first performance after practicing for a week and it sounded great without a mic. The sharper tones cut through the guitar and bass that was going through the PA. Overall, I really think the price point and quality were good. The 16" obviously has more bottom end but you have to be selective about where you hit it close to the rim to get the same mid tones the 12" gets regularly. For a little over $200 with a stand, its a nice instrument that will last if taken care of. Its also not so heavy that my son can't carry it himself (with the handy strap).
