Ready to dazzle the lesser mortals who flip Spyderco's.
When I opened the box and held the knife in my hand for the very first time, I thought "Damn those scales have sharp edges." And they do. When its new, it has a lot of tiny sharp pointy edges where the scales were machine cut. Fortunately they wear down and smooth out and the knife is very comfortable in my hand now. The blade is very impressive. I bought the big one to replace a CRKT M16 that I carried for 16 years and gave to my nephew. I wanted a little flash and like you, loved the look of this knife. But the handsomeness of the weapon is nothing compared to how robust this monster folder is. I actually considered buying a belt sheath for it and carrying it open in the sheath. It would look awesome carried like that. The blade is thick, like industrial thick, but the grind is a flat taper that starts about halfway down from the top of the steel. Gimping is short, sharp and works well. I polished the tapered section my blade with some rouge with my power drill and man is it gorgeous. The bearings are silky smooth and the blade pops into position with a nice, masculine thunk. The design of the handle, the ergonomics of it, is excellent. If you ever have to fight someone with this knife, it will serve you very well. Your grip will remain strong and stabilized, even if wet, and the heel of the handle will concentrate a decisive punch to any boney mass. This knife looks like an art piece, but its really a working knife. I can see it getting a lot of use around the farm, and riding in the pocket into town that night, ready to dazzle the lesser mortals who flip Spyderco's. The one bad decision CRKT made was the belt clip. I have enjoyed Coke's that came in stronger aluminum than the steel used for this belt clip. Its like a bad joke. I can easily, almost without effort, bend it. My one-year old can bend it. Seriously. CHEAP. How that clip ever made it out of design approval I will never know, but CRKT owes all owners a free upgrade. And CRKT, if you don't know how to make a good clip, ask Kershaw to make one for you. I have three of theirs and they are all grade A. Yours is a C-. D, really. Yours is the mere idea of a clip. Kershaw gives us the reality of a strong clip, properly designed.

Great Knife - Product Description Isn't
Super knife. This larger of the two Fossils is BIG and HEAVY...really a belt clip or back jeans pocket kinda folder, and because I knew that going in (in spite of the product description) I rate it five stars. It is well designed and meticulously made by CRKT. The one-handed open is smooth as butter and the weight of the blade gives you a very satisfactory "thunk" when flipped open. The lockup is tight. A ball detente keeps the blade closed when folded, but it can still be opened with your fingers if you want (need) to be quiet. The handle fits a man's hand very nicely, and provides suitable grip when wet. The blade is heavy enough for just about anything you want to use it for short of felling trees and chopping your way through jungle terrain, and is sharp enough out of the box except for the anal-retentive among us (count me in that number) who just HAVE to use a stone to finish the edge. I anticipate that with minimal caution with its use and some cleaning and a touch of oil after the fact, it will outlast the owner. I really can't add much more to what others have said about the knife. What I will say, is whoever wrote the Product Description for these knives on the Amazon webpages needs to be fired...Worst description I have ever read, with incorrect names for the designer and the two other knives mentioned in the description, without bothering to state the dimensions or weight of the individual knife being described. Don't fault the knife for the faulty write-up, guys! If you can keep your wife from finding out how much you paid for it, you need to get yourself one. On second thought, forget that, get one period...you won't be disappointed.

This is an amazing knife. It really is a work of art
This is an amazing knife. It really is a work of art. With that prehistoric kind of influence on the colors and design it has that ugly kind of beauty to it. The opening mechanism is soft as a whisper and it practically glides open with the flick of a wrist before it locks into place. If you're the kind that prefers to open with a finger instead of a whipping motion, it's got a flipper tab that you can open without all the motion and kinetic energy. It's very satisfying to open up. The serrations are very bold. My only complaint: The clip WILL snag on things and the knife will get pulled out of pocket if you aren't careful. One of the first times I carried it, I got back into the house and found it missing. Searched the yard in a mix of panic and anger and eventually found it inside the house hanging from a molle loop on the diaper bag that I'd been carrying. At some point, the loop got under the flared end of the pocket clip and lifted the knife right out of my pocket. Similar things have happened since but I'm more careful since I know it's an issue. Some time, I will look into replacing the clip with something that hugs the body of the knife at the end of the clip instead of the lifted end that the factory clip has. That said, the knife is just too damn nice not to own, despite the pocket clip issue. Even knowing this, I'd still buy another if I lost or broke this one.

Cool knife
Unique and solid knife. Handle is a little thin but still worth buying.

Solid knife.
This is a great looking, no doubt about it! It has a good weight, it feels hefty in your hand. It smacks of quality and its design and form back that up. Even when its just sitting there you can't help but want to pick it up and look at it. Its opening flipper is oh so smooth and the sound when it opens is solid. What truly got me about this tool is when it's open it sits firmly in your hand. The space left by the blade when it exits its housing is very well suited for a firm grip and the overall size of the blade when open assures you that it is up to most tasks you ask of a knife of this size...and it is a good size. The serrated part of the blade is a good size and adds to the functionality of the knife. The blade is very sharp out the box and I like the sturdiness of the pocket clip. All in all this feels like a robust knife but I still have to give it some milage and see if it holds up to real world situations. I'm happy about this purchase. This is my first CRKT knife and it may not be the last.

This knife is high quality, one of my favs!
This is such a nice, high quality knife that any avid enthusiast should add to their collection as soon as possible. This knife is simply fantastic. The design is great, and the pressure needed to open the blade is so well engineered, it opens 99% of the time with minimal effort because the amount of force needed to move the notch down to open the blade is almost equivalent to the force needed to fully extend the blade. If you increase the force by just a smidgen, I swear, this is just as fast as any more notable assisted-open knives, such as the S&W M.A.G.I.C. Assisted series. I recently purchased the S&W SWMP6BS a few days after buying this CRKT, and I was very impressed with the S&W's assisted open mechanism. The blade really fly's out quickly, almost like an auto knife. However, the CRKT, although it seems slower, actually comes out about as fast as the S&W M.A.G.I.C. Assisted knife. I opened both of them at the same time, one in the left hand and one in the right hand, and they appear to open at the same time. The design on this CRKT is very impressive, to say the least. You can get this blade out quickly and the disengaging mechanism to close the blade has nice tension to it, not too much and not to little, so it requires a bit of force to close it but not so much that it is uncomfortable. When you operate this knife, you can tell it's quality. One thing worth mentioning, is when you slide the locking mechanism over to disengage the lock, I think because the blade is so thick/heavy, it almost drops down automatically. I cut myself earlier just closing the knife and by the time I went to move my thumb over after pushing the lever over to close the knife, the blade had dropped down and hit my thumb as it was moving out of the way. I barely touched the blade and it cut me lol. Very sharp, well made knife. Highly suggest picking one up. Maybe two ;)

Good Knife with a lot of Personality
I have to admit that the looks of this knife caught my eye. The G10 grips are sculpted into a raised pattern that gives a terrific grip. The hand-hammered steel sides to the knife add to the distinctive appearance. The open is smooth and easy because of the ball bearings on the pivot. The blade is an asymmetrical spear point with a concave grind down to the cutting edge. The Fossil is solidly built. When it is locked open, it feels as solid as a fixed blade. My son and I have been CRKT fans for a long time and the Fossil does not disappoint. I am replacing a Benchmade Ares with the Fossil because the Ares is getting old and valuable. I have carried it for 24 years and it is a tough act to follow. The Fossil is up to the task. I can be critical when it comes to knives -- I've owned a bunch of them, but I can't find anything to not like about the Fossil. 5 Stars.

Solid knife I’d recommend
I love the quality and build , while others find it to be a bit heavy I actually think it’s pretty light. It also comes pretty sharp out the box, really have no complaints solid knife.
