loved it
This is what you imagine when you can’t get your jeans on after putting them I. The dryer! Lol a surrogate unit that represents you when you want to be “all that you can be”. But in this tale folks got to dependent and did not want someone else making their decisions for them by shorting out the surries. Loved how to make the comic book afterwards too

Not Like the Movie At All
I decided to buy and read "The Surrogates" because, of course, the movie was coming out soon and it had Bruce Willis in it, and I've lately been drawn into the graphic novel universe. So I said, why not? I've read a few other graphic novels and the concepts presented in this one were interesting.First off, the graphic novel is significantly different from the movie, so you should probably read it even if you have already seen the movie. It starts off with the same initial setup--some surries get zapped and detectives are there to investigate--but pretty much from that moment on it diverges from the movie. Characters are the same, but they don't do what they did in the movie, tec. So read the novel, it's worth it.The storyline is definitely interesting and pulls you along, weaving the actual detective work together with the life of the main detective, Greer. You find out about his relationship with his wife and how the introduction of the surrogates--androids that the user controls and that pretty much act out everyone's daily life for safety reasons--has altered society and interpersonal relationships to a huge extent. The main idea of the surrogates is what kept me interested in the novel, although the plotline about who's zapping surrogates and why also drew me in. The ramifications on every aspect of society if we did ever reach a point where the majority of the population lived their lives through surrogates is . . . astounding. And that's why this graphic novel rocks. It's also why it's slightly disappointing. There are so many aspects of life that would change that what was presented in the novel seemed . . . limited. I loved the story and the novel, but when I was finished I felt that there was SO MUCH MORE to explore with this concept and I was disappointed that there wasn't more, a volume 2 or something. I know there's a prequel, and I will definitely read that, but I seriously hope that there will be more set in this world in the future because there is so much more left to explore.Since this is a graphic novel, I must also comment on the artwork: spectacular. The artwork was subtle and appropriate and a perfect amalgamation of art and photoshopping, especially regarding some of the SF elements that were incorporated into the artwork, such as realistic digital screens and such. At the same time, the artwork was extremely simple. The level of detail was appropriate and minimalistic, as well as the color palette. Some panels were sketchy and blocky, others were more finely detailed, and the ability of the artist to convey complex emotions through facial expression and such was astounding. So, overall a very good graphic novel, the only drawback being that the world created had SO MUCH potential that I felt there should have been much more done in this universe and with this plotline, so was disappointed when the novel ended. I'd love to see more from this pair, and even if you've seen the movie, I'd definitely suggest reading the novel.

Great concept, good first 75%, abrupt (disappointing) ending
I saw the movie trailers and was really excited by the concept. I don't normally read graphic novels, although I read the Watchmen before the movie came out and really enjoyed it. So, I wanted to read this before seeing the movie. I was really interested and excited after the first half, it was a great concept and I really enjoyed how the author developed some of the story. However, I was really disappointed in the abruptness of the climax and ending of the story. It kind of reminded me of myself in high school English when we were assigned a story to write...I would start out with an interesting concept, then get bored and finish it as quickly as possible just so I could turn it in. Same thing here. Great start, interesting story, climax that ended in two pages with little drama and no suspense. After finishing this book, I decided that I don't need to rush out to see the movie, and the movie reviews seem to support that conclusion.

Quick entertaining read
The story is pretty good but it's the world created in the Surrogates is very intriguing and one I wish would be explored in a more long form medium. The art style is definitely not my style. I have not read too many comics so I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur but I find myself wishing this had more of a "Batman The Killing Joke" or "Watchmen" art style; detailed and lifelike.I read this in one sitting on a flight across country. It's pretty short and some pages have little to no text at all, just large graphic panels. This edition has dense meta-material in between books (similar to Watchmen). Things like ads for the surrogates, news articles, white papers, etc. that really immerse you. Overall it's very entertaining and I look forward to seeing the movie adaptation.

Amazing Artwork, Interesting Tale
I'll admit this is my first graphic novel ever, so I'm not exactly an expert on the subject. But I was interested in reading it after I saw the movie which is based on the book. The story is pretty entertaining. I like the premise and the main character in particular. I loved the ending. But I thought the whole villain thing was a little underdeveloped as far as motivation, but all in all, great story. The artwork was amazing and really sold the story, I thought.

amazing
i loved every second of this book. the story line is what i consider to be as classic as something along the lines of any phillip k dick story ive every read. and the artwork completely floored me. its a non tradition comic art that looks like rough storyboards with an organic hand painted color and background [even if it is through a computer]what made this go from a 4 star to a 5 star for me was the supplemental material at the end of the book where the author goes through step by step the four year process of making the book. real insightful stuff you dont get with many comics. i read a lot of comics and this has moved into the #1 recommendation slot for anyone that enjoys SF.

Compelling sci-fi noir
I loved the ideas floating in the background of surrogates - mega Atlanta, reservations for religious luddites, and most of all, the implications of surrogate bodies. The art is interesting, if a little crude, but over all a compelling story.

If you have enjoyed comic books, then this one is for you. It's really a man's book.
I liked how the author put explanatory texts in between chapters.

Ignore the movie- this is all you need
The art style may initially be off-putting in its' sketchy roughness, but once you get past that there is a trtuly great story to be told that is actually well served by the art style.

Nice SciFi inspired by Ghost in the Shell
As a fan of the Ghost in the Shell Manga and Anime series I like this Graphic Novel, too.It lacks the visual violence of the above, which I don't miss. It was heavily inspired by Ghost in the Shell (or just couldn't find a cyborg-issue, that Masamune Shirow didn't iterate through in one of his the numerous GitS stories). It has the decot concept of GitS 2 Manga, a Puppetmaster as in Standalone Complex, and even has a funny reference to the AI-Plot of the original Movie.Graphically, the Surrogates uses a style that's somewhere between Manga and american Comic. Basically most cells are black-white drawings with a monochrome background. Usually, there is just one ambient color in different brightness to create light and shadow. This works better, than it might sound at first. The story is intresting, logically and almost at every point the persons act reasonably. There's just one situation where a powerfull person seems to be blackmailed too easily. But since everyone follows his own agenda, he/she might have fooled the detective.

Fantastic conceptualisation of a post-human future
This vision of the future is really interesting. The story it hangs in is good, though perhaps didn't do quite enough to confront all the ways such a world would be different from our own. (Disappointingly very decidedly humanist moral to the story.) The look is interesting, though perhaps the minimalist, sketchy design doesn't quite convey the futuristic world as vividly as it might.

I enjoyed it but couldn't really compare it to any others
This is one of the few graphic novels I have read. I enjoyed it but couldn't really compare it to any others.
