I’ve never colored my hair but recently began going to Aveda to cover greys for the first time in my life and was happy with the results. Since my visits were each running $400+ incl tip for a simple single color dark brown process, I decided to look into diy options. I was concerned that I had no experience and that I needed a product that was compatible with the Japanese straightening I get every 7months or so. dpHUE instructions were easy to follow and provided PERFECT salon quality (if not better) results. There are 2 applications per box, and each contains plenty of product to cover all roots & a good amount of growth. I start the timer for about 45 minutes after I finish the application, so the whole marinating process takes about an hour of exposure. All greys are completely covered and my hair is left soft and shiny. I write this review today after using the 2nd application that was provided in the root touch up box approximately 7-8 weeks after the 1st with a consistently perfect result again. I will reorder and will also try the conditioning glaze which I see is highly rated by past users. I’m so happy with the quality results and the considerable savings from skipping the salon! This was a game changer for me.

It used to work well for my dark hair, covered grays well. But It has changed, since they changed the packaging a few months ago. Doesn’t seem to be the same product. Has anyone else noticed the change? The color fades fast now and the grays seem a bit orange brown. Just when you find something you like they go and change it.

I have medium rich brown hair. I went to Aveda salons for years but where I now live the prices everywhere average $65 for a single process color to color the new growth. I’m retired now so that’s too steep for me. I’ve colored my own hair on and off during my adult life so I’m pretty good at it. Normally I mix half and half, medium and half dark brown, but since I had never used this product I tried medium brown first. It was a tad too light so I ordered dark brown this time and used half and half. It came out perfectly. I have very gray roots and left it on a full hour. A plastic cap is provided so I just put it on and watched tv while it processed. There was very little odor when I was applying it and no scalp burning. I washed it out in the shower. It’s easy to wash out and doesn’t stain tile or grout. There was little to no fading with the medium brown so I expect the same with this especially since it’s a bit darker, but I will update if that happens. I wish they would come out with more shades. I think going too dark with dark brown and too light with medium brown is a common problem so maybe they will expand their color range some day to add a rich brown 4.5 N. Most of the at home colors I’ve used have faded to a brassy shade at the part so the gray didn’t stay colored well, plus other problems. I think this is the closest to salon color I’ve ever found. Buying 2 kits in two different shades will last 4 months since there are two applications in each box. It works out to $12 an application which I am more than happy to pay for a great product. It sure beats $65.
