do the cars float when they are out of the boat?

They do float, but for a very short time. I'm more inclined to just say no. However, when my grandson is playing in the tub, the cars have stayed above water.

Does it let water in the boat to create mold?

My boat definitely created mold which leaked out into the bath water. We had to throw it out.

Will it float? Noticed one review said it didn't.

All of the green toys (I own all 4) float very well! We love them!

Why is it called green ?

The plastic used is made from recycled soda bottles. "Green" as in recycled material. Hope that helps. -Itty Bitty City staff.
