Joe Kidd [DVD]

One of my favorites!

Interesting characters in this movie, quite a bit of humor and plenty of action. If you loan it to a friend, you'll probably never recover it -- it's that good.

I first saw "Joe Kidd" in the theater when it was first released in the summer of 1972. I was 16 at the time. Well, I'm 67 now and got it on DVD and I appreciate it even more. It takes place in New Mexico in 1902. Clint Eastwood stars as the title character, a former bounty hunter, now a rancher. He's hired by a land baron played by the great Robert Duvall to track down a Mexican renegade played by John Saxon. The lovely Stella Garcia is the leading lady. He later finds out that Duvall's character is greedy and ruthless. The henchman working for him played by Don Stroud and Paul Koslo are familiar faces. Kidd justly decides to help Saxon's character and a battle is carried out. Directed by John Sturges who directed two classic westerns, " Gunfight at the O.K. Corral " from 1957 starring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday and "The Magnificent Seven" from 1960 starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, which are great flicks. Features fine cinematography by Bruce Surtees, who worked with Eastwood on two of his best westerns, "High Plains Drifter," the following year, and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" in 1976. The movie was actually filmed in the beautiful High Sierras in northern California. And there is another good score by composer Lalo Schifrin. The tagline for the movie poster read.... "If You're Looking For Trouble---He's Joe Kidd !"

If you've seen almost all of Eastwood's Westerns, then I reckon you'll want to see them all. And this one is probably worth watching.That said, this is nowhere near in the league of The Outlaw Josie Wales, Pale Rider, or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Those are first class films. And it's not even as good as lesser titles like "Hang 'em High", "High Plains Drifter", or the first 2 installments of the "man with no name" series.In this film, lots of things are pretty good and on par with the rest, like the scenery, the horsemanship, and the acting of most. Eastwood's character is slightly disappointing.What really isn't so great: the script. The plot is OK, but there are decidedly too many unrealistic scenes and takes. A number of scenes simply have too many extras, which at times make the plot seem sort of ridiculous.And much of the gunplay is really quite bad, which is a terrible thing for a Western, where you expect mostly deadeye shots, and not too many of them.

It wasn't one of his best but it is a good movie.

Unfortunately I could not watch this all the way through as at 41:44 there's a glitch in the soundtrack that leaves the rest of the film out of sync by several seconds. I troubleshot the issue as recommended but it's very clearly an issue with the digital transfer of the film itself, not a system error or anything to do with my network. I rented the film on a different service and had no such issue, so clearly Prime Video just has a bad version of the file on their platform somehow. I tried to get a refund but there is no recourse for this issue on the help page, they just direct you to a Prime Video forum to discuss with other consumers rather than offering a direct solution. Go figure. DO NOT RENT THIS MOVIE ON PRIME!
