Made in Bangladesh - badly!
My daughter chose this as a gift for her grandmother's 85th birthday. She wanted to get something pretty, and she wanted something made in one of the pottery factories in Stoke on Trent, where her Nan was born and bred. Portmeirion's website says that 'most' of their ceramics are made in Stoke, but this item is stamped Made in Bangladesh. That upset both of us for a start, as it is a bit of a mockery to give a Potteries-born lady who used to work for Wedgwood a piece of pottery made in Bangladesh. On top of that, it isn't even boxed - it came in a bubble-wrap bag with a piece of card supposedly holding the lid and pot onto the cup. The lid had come off in transit, and though nothing was badly damaged there are some scratches on the glaze. The pattern and design are pretty enough but it's shoddily presented and it isn't a quality product. The lithographs have not been matched up so that the pattern on the teapot matches up to the pattern on the cup; when the handles are aligned as they are meant to be, the teacup pattern is a good centimetre and a half right of where it should be. My daughter is in tears over this, as there isn't time to get anything else. And I'm very angry, as I feel we have been defrauded. At the very least the listing should be changed to give country of manufacture and to warn that no box is provided, so no-one else gets a piece of cheaply knocked-out tat when they think they are getting an acceptable gift.

Fake?
I just received this in the post as a replacement for one I had been given as a gift which got broken. It’s nothing like as nice as my original and I assume a cheap copy. I noticed immediately on unwrapping it that the knob on the teapot lid wasn’t was as fine looking. On further examination it’s much heavier, the teapot doesn’t fit snugly over the cup like my first one and the colour of the china isn’t the nice clear white. I weighed them both out of interest and even with the parts broken off my original and the fact that it’s very slightly larger, the difference in weight is 455g v 624g i hope Portmeirion wouldn’t want to put their name to this Made in Bangladesh item. I’ve asked for a refund.

Lovely quality, original present for foreign friends!
This was bought as a present for a Japanese friend. Black tea and a one man English tea-set, that really was received well. It's original in the concept, and the design is beautifully done. A saucer would have made this a 200% lovely pressy, but it was still very good as it is.
