Can it be made more obvious? - I am enjoying this book as I learn about the what has seemed to me overwhelming number of tribes of native Americans. The art work and illustrations and maps are wonderful. I do have a criticism for the author. When I look at the citations for the art work, I see the name of the Museum, but no artist is listed. [I am thinking pp. 22-23 from the Art Gallery of Ontario. If the artist is 'unknown', it would seem proper to specify this. Any artist wants acknowledgement of their work of art. I hope the author sees this review and can post a correction if there are future editions...or even send me a list! Thanks in advance!

Beatuiful Book, one to keep
Beautiful book. The diagrams and pictures help bring the topics to life. The reading level is probably high school. I am using it as an additional resource in my grade 4 homeschool. For Native Americans, I also viewed 500 Nations and recommend it also. We will be keeping this obe to use through the years.

I highly recommend this book for this purpose
Very well written. Anyone doing research will find this very helpful in tracking the travels of the tribes in connection with the movement of our pioneering families. We have nothing definative yet but this book is helping to track them. At the same time this family was moving about, was about the same time the tribes were being relocated or forced out. I highly recommend this book for this purpose. Our Native American brothers & sisters, respected the land, & for the most part lived simple but fullfilling lives. Their everyday items of living are works of art. I admire & wish I had the same skill, to make such beautiful things as they did & still do.

Perfect introduction and overview into Native American
I wouldn't expect less from a National Geographic published book. The book provides an excellent timeline, overview and history of our Native American peoples that doesn't sugar coat the "Manifest Destiny" paradigm or devastation of colonialism. Beautiful layout throughout the book as well - from the maps, timelines and supplemental photographs.

Excellent Steal
This is a great collection of knowledge, especially for the price! All the reviews about the pictures, maps, and descriptions are accurate. As an aspiring anthropologist, I find this especially useful when I need to compare my area of expertise (California) with the rest of the continent. Now, if only they could make one of these brilliant guides for the rest of the Americas....

This is a superbly constructed volume with great illustrations, wonderfully drafted maps and very clear textual explantions. As far as it goes, Hollywood has created a fairy tale out of the destruction of America's native cultures, having this book to accompany, "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee", helps younger readers (I first read the latter at 17) realise how great a tragedy the reality was. It is hard to accept that natives of our European nations, many of whom could be our distant relatives, we're knowingly responsible for the genocide of tribe after tribe, whether by disease or design. What price Manifest Destiny? This book lists the cost, totals the bill. We may one day reach for the stars, hopefully by then we might have learned from this and other inhuman deeds. What we must not do is happily swallow the fairy tale because that is much easier.

I personally love maps and surprisingly this book had lots of them :) Along with great artwork, the book is researched with sensitivity to Native Americans. What's not to like, well done on all levels.
