Makes the Bible "real". - I was gifted my first copy of this book over 40 years ago and it has been my go-to reference when I study the Bible. I tend to read this book concurrently with my Bible reading. I have bought updated versions as they came out, to keep up with new information that was added. The book is a great reference for anyone studying the Bible, and interested in archeology and the history of the Bible. I would be a valuable asset for anyone studying Jewish history too, since almost the first ½ of the book concerns the Old Testament. It helps show that the Bible story is not an abstraction, but is rooted in history and that there are archeological evidence to support the events and places mentioned. It makes the bible more "real". It is a convenient size, so that it could be read in bed, and the typeface and font size are readable. I find it much more useful to look up things in this book when I have a question, vs. heavier tomes, such as Strong's Bible Reference. Some of the "classic" version illustrations were the only weak spot in the book. The older books had line drawn maps, which were difficult to interpret. The photos were all in black and white, and often of such high contrast, that the details were hard to appreciate. Despite these deficiencies, it is still one of the best Bible reference books out there. I saw a "deluxe" version of this book on desertcart, and ordered it along with this one, just to see what the difference would be. The price differential was not prohibitive. I would have to say that the Deluxe version is printed on much better paper, and the illustrations and photos are in color. Many of the images have been updated in the Deluxe version. The textual content appears to be the same, so there are no real changes in the substance of the book, but it does appear to be more visually appealing. It is also a larger book, by about an inch on all sides, and bit thicker. If you are interested in this book, I would recommend that you spend the extra money and get the Deluxe version. Either one will serve you well in your study of the Bible. Great Bible Study Help!!!!!
I love the way Halley's Bible Hand book starts off with a wonderful quote "The Bible is the most priceless possession of the human race," and I would whole heartily agree. Halley also has great quotes from D. L. moody, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and many many others, all great stuff. Halley called his hand book "a handy brief manual...for the average Bible reader," and it is also just as handy for the theologian. The hand book is easy to read it is not burdened down with difficult nomenclature, so anyone can get a lot from it. The handbook contains a bible chapter by chapter notes for the whole text, sometimes its verse by verse and sometimes chapter's on the same subject are group, but it overall is pretty comprehensive and can help one understand any difficulties they are having with the biblical text. There are also very good sections on archeological discoveries that have reference to the Bible and also a great section on Church History, that is worth the price alone. I highly recommend this as a great bible study help.

Smaller than expected
It was time to replace my old copy of this classic book. I had picked up a used version many years ago which was the Billy Graham crusade edition from the 1960s. It was falling apart and so I ordered this one. The book itself is exactly what I was looking for. I'm only giving 4 stars because the book is only about 7 inches tall. There is a 9 inch tall version which is what I was actually thinking I was getting. It doesn't change the content of the book at all. It's just that it is not the size of most of my Bible resource books. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it at all except I was thinking I was buying the taller (and a little more expensive) version. That's just a preference issue for me. Have a blessed day!

An absolute must as a 'bible-aid' for your bible study. It helps bring so many things to life from the bible, through pictures and archaeological information about certain sites and much more! So happy I purchased this little gem. I also bought one for my son, knowing his interest in the archaeology and historical reviews/pictures of the bible, he loves it too!

My parents gave me the Halleys Handbook years ago but the print was so tiny. This is the large print edition and I am reading every word because it is very informative and Halley makes many points about the Biblical texts which I had not thought about in quite the unique way he does. The handbook contains many photos of archiological findings and explains extremely well those many things in the Bible which are sometimes difficult for someone doing a self study to understand.

I am very content with this Halley's Bible Handbook. Though used, it's in excellent condition and has no markings or tears or highlights. In fact I can barely see that it's used, only a slight smudge and one corner is slightly worn but hardly noticeable. I would definitely order from this provider again.

I purchased this book without much prior knowledge of the author or his theological background. It was on sale, and I simply couldn't resist the temptation. I should clarify that, typically, before buying any book, I verify that the author’s theology is orthodox according to Reformed standards (as I am Reformed myself). I found the book to be useful in some respects, but I would hardly recommend it to a Reformed or Calvinist reader. The author’s interpretation is ambiguous regarding God’s will in soteriology. For instance, in his commentary on Romans 9:6–24, he writes: 'In this passage, Paul is not discussing the predestination of individuals to salvation or condemnation. Rather, he asserts God's absolute sovereignty in the choice and management of the nations of the world so as to bring all at last in subjection to Him...' As you can see, his premises argue against God’s sovereignty in the salvation of individuals while affirming it only in the 'management of nations.' Paradoxically, he maintains that God is sovereign when leading nations to submission, yet denies that same sovereignty when it comes to the personal salvation of men.
