Jenny Nimmo's Chrlie Bone 8-Books Collection
My grandson was extremely pleased with this collection - it was part of his Christmas presents. Great to see mini computer boffins actually sit down and read books.

I bought this set after reading the first four in the library to see if they were appropriate for my 8 year old to read (I elected to wait till he is 9). I found it interesting enough that *I* wanted to finish the series! The books have a simpler-to-follow-story than another, more, uh "familiar and well known" boy with magic powers (which I won't give to that same kid, till he is 11!). In the Charlie Bone series, all the main characters have magic within them that they just...use. No wands required, no magical training required. There are a lot of similarities to the other series: young boy is the main character who discovers magic powers when he's about age 10, he's sent to a school where there's other magic kids, there's a gathering place where everyone likes to meet that's in an out of the way place where they get food and drinks, there's always the Big Evil to fight that's a long-vanished man, etc. But there's not a bunch of super complicated back stories to follow, which makes it easier for younger kids to understand. When the main characters are looking for something, they basically go out and find it. When they fight the bad guy, it's pretty much written like "and there was a fight, and the kids won, and the bad guy was vanquished!" The kids act like KIDS the entire time--Charlie is only 12 in the last book--and they do dumb kid things because they are still kids. And the main character isn't all-powerful, intelligent, and always winning. I considered it even better that there's normal kid problems in there too, with arguments among them, with misunderstandings going on, and with one of the characters loving his dog more than anything (and refusing to be consoled when he gets lost, which is something a normal 11 year old would do). Jenny Nimmo did a great job in making the characters act like REAL KIDS WOULD ACT! Some of them are so well written, you get mad at them--which means you've become invested. I really liked the series and she left one thread open (you'd have to be really paying attention in book 8!) in case the series was to continue (it didn't, as far as I know). I've got to go read the Red King prequel trilogy now, and the two related books (Henry's, and Gabriel's) because I really like the universe Jenny created and I know my kid will too!
