Alcohol Explained

Absolutely a MUST READ
William Porter has done more to help me understand alcohol addiction (any addiction, for that matter) than any other person, therapist, group or book I've ever encountered. If you're confused and upset by your own drinking and want help getting out of the trap, this IS the book for you! If you just want to learn more about why the addiction is so baffling, this is the book for you.Porter explains how alcohol affects the brain and body in user-friendly (but never condescending) ways that create an entirely new perspective on the drug, what it does and doesn't do, and how to escape the trap without panic, misery or feeling deprived. If you or someone you love are caught in the frustrating and bewildering maze of alcohol addiction, this book is definitely a must-read!

Life changing and mind blowing book!!
I loved how this book goes through how alcohol effects everything in your life. I had no idea for example how much even one drink impacts your sleep and so while listening to the sleep chapter I started analyzing my own sleep patterns and the amount of REM vs deep sleep I was getting with a drink vs without a drink and now I know my sleep is way worse with even one drink in the evening (I wear a WHOOP so I see every detail of my sleep every night so its easy to see the numbers - the proof). This book helped me understand my own drinking patterns and the people around me and I am truly so happy to have read this book. I might not quit completely but now I will consciously decide whether to drink KNOWING what it will do to my body and I am most definitely going to cut way back. This is a lifesaver!!!

Good fact-based approach
I really loved the first 18 chapters. They were very helpful in understanding how alcohol was impacting. Starting with chapter 19, I skipped some chapters because I had already quit. I was reading this while doing The Alcohol Experiment, so I didn't need some of the chapters convincing me not to drink. All in all, good stuff.

Worth the read | Sources?
Overall, I think this book is a great read for anyone. Although, the individuals that may benefit the most are this wishing to reduce consumption. I would have given this a five star rating but zero references to sources. If you are going to make claims on scientific findings, then have an appendix with sources or footnotes. With that said, I still encourage you to read.

This was the best book for me to stop drinking
This is the fourth book I have read to help me to stop drinking (including This Naked Mind). This is the best book. This book really explains what alcohol does to you psychologically and physically, and that is what I really needed. The most important thing I learned (and I learned so much from this book), and I keep telling myself everyday: Something triggers me to have that glass of wine (and I have many, many triggers), and that glass of wine helps me to relax, and it does. But I can't stop at one; I feel so good, I have to have another, and sometimes another. But then how do I feel after that? WORSE . I am tired, I don't have energy to do anything, my stomach bothers me, I have to eat a lot of food. When all this stops, I still don't feel that well. I want more wine to make myself feel better. And on and on.There are so many more cons to the pros of drinking that wine. Today is only my 4th day (and that is a milestone for me) with no wine, and I so hope I will never touch it again. Many reviewers said that the author's sources are not documented. I don't want the book bogged down with all that. I am sure the author learned all of this from good sources, and he has passed it on to us in a way that is so easy to understand. Thank you William Porter for saving my life.

For the first time I am actually present in my own life - thank you Mr Porter!
This one. Get this one. What do YOU think about you and alcohol? Whatever it is, this will turn everything upside-down. You get to really understand what it is and what it does - what alcohol REALLY does. Why would you do that? Why would anyone? I read this in one sitting. I’m now on day 28 alcohol free (considering where I was on my alcohol journey, this for me is incredible). For the first time I am actually present in my own life and it’s truly joyful!! Hard to believe all the things I’ve missed. I really want everyone to read this book.

Life changing book.
To anyone wondering whether alcohol is affecting their lives, those one is for you. I read 4 other books before this one, including Alan Carr and Annie Grace. All were OK, but this book is so concise , factual, to the point and presented with such immutable logic that it completely nailed it for me. I stopped alcohol from the moment I read it. I don't feel a desire for alcohol : why would I? It's all been explained to me! Absolutely tremendous and life changing reading which I cannot recommend more highly. I owe the author an enormous debt of gratitude for his role in shaping the rest of my life. It's hard to avoid sounding over the top, but it is the truth.

Absolutely the best book about alcohol and its properties.
Should be given to every teenager and read by everybody who is unable to control their alcohol intake. Because this book explains in simple and convincing terms why it is almost impossible to have an easy relationship with alcohol. And, by reading the book, you can see how your brain and your body respond to alcohol, which gives you the means to stop drinking. It’s an amazing book. Not at all preachy, there’s no sense that you are going to be caught out by the author. He just answers all those questions you ask yourself - poor sleep patterns, self disgust, memory loss etc. etc. etc. and then leaves it up to you what if anything you will do about it. I’ve recommended it to loads of people and they concur. A game changer. I’m surprised the drinks industry hasn’t found a way to ban it.

An excellent book
A clear, concise book which has enlightened and educated me on how alcohol can become so addictive. In my 40's, although I don't drink every day I find it very difficult to stop at one drink and in the past in certain situations will carry on until I have no recollection of the last part of the night out. With that comes the disappointment in myself, embarrassment in case I've done something stupid or have been rude to friends and the shame. I'm very grateful that the author has taken the time and effort to explain everything so fully and it has inspired me to stop drinking alcohol. It's the realisation that it's not the magic elixir which will markedly improve every social situation or the perceived treat in supposedly being essential to be able to relax. It's an illusion. Time to take control of my life, my contentment, my success and my happiness. I've only got one life so it would be nice to find out how great it can really be without alcohol. Bring on this adventure. Thank you William Porter for the education and tools to quit.

Are we talking about the same book?
From reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon, I thought this book would surely be "the one" to read on the subject of alcohol. To my surprise, on opening the book I see that it is printed in a sans-serif font. A great font for screen reading, but on paper it is fatiguing to the eyes. It also makes the text look like a high school paper. And when I started reading, it read like a high school paper as well, but not a very good one. This author states that all his claims are backed up by science. But he never references any verifiable study. Rather, we get something along the lines of "There was an article in the newspaper recently that scientists from...". What does he mean by recently? And what newspaper was it? And which scientists is he talking about? Alas, we never get to find out. Also, I have never read a book that uses the word "actually" with such fervour. On top of that, there are many spelling and grammatical errors. Like "The route of the problem is..." etc. Given all that, I could not bring myself to finish this book. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
