Great if used properly!!
Great camping grill if used properly.First, I would not cook directly on it right away. As other reviewers have mentioned it is painted black and it will peel off. I purchased two 16x9 Griddles (See below) which perfectly covered half the grill. The griddles are reversible. I was able to boil water and make coffee on one half of the grill, while at the same time cooking anything from bacon & eggs to burger & dogs on the other side. I have never had a better camping/cooking experience. (Personally don't like gas when camping, fire only...)If you are looking for a large, heavy duty grill this is it, just use it properly. I will update this post after a few more uses and see if I am comfortable cooking directly on it over time. Plus I want to upload a picture so you can all see how sweet this set up is with the griddles!!Used it again this weekend. Couldn't be happier. Excellent camping grill!
My wife bought this for a Labor Day camping trip. After reading reviews about the paint/oil dripping off during the first use I placed the grate on the fire upside down to burn off anything before actually cooking on this grill. This warped the grill (no SUPRISE) but after it cooled it went right back to normal.Used the grill for the next 3 days with excellent results! No complaints at all! Held up and was sturdy, no "melting" as in some other reviews. I would definitely buy this again. As a heads up: the grill isn't very tall, if your cooking over a fire ring it's worth finding some rocks or we used cinder blocks to raise the height. I suppose you could build a small fire and this wouldn't be an issue, but we have the extra large grill and it needed a larger fire, also had we not brought the blocks it would have actually sat on fire ring. Again easy enough fix, but something to consider... - this is the only reason grill got 4 instead of 5 stars! This pics show the grill with every pot in our kitchen, and the other is the grill in use!

Left a family with days of stomach issues.
Look around. I'm not the only review complaining about the paint issue. I spent close to 2 hours burning plenty of wood underneath of this grill to work around this issue. Afterwards I cooked 3 separate foods for myself, my son and daughter for a casual cookout night. All of us ended up with severe stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea over 2 days. I started a return but it's Not worth paying $15 for a new box to send this back in. Tossing in my recycling bin. Amazon is amazing but should do the right thing and not sell this product anymore.

Works Exactly As Expected
Works exactly as I expected it would, 5 stars. Can serve as a handy "table" for gear around your campsite and is easy to set up over your fire for cooking. The 16'' x 12'' version folds to about an inch thick for storage, fit nicely in my gear bag and doesn't have any sharp edges that could damage you or your other equipment. This grill is sturdy and strong enough for cast iron with plenty of space for multiple items. Overall we're very pleased with this purchase.Note: When placing over a hot fire be mindful as the legs can require adjusting. On our last trip, we used this grill for coffee and cooking in pans and it functioned exactly how we needed it to. We'll confidently use it just like a regular grill with meat on the grates but will first "season" it with oil/fat like cast iron. Some pictures other users have uploaded show the grill directly over the middle of the fire; we placed ours on the edge to avoid flame and flare ups as well as to establish a hotter cooking zone and a warming zone.

Works Great
After reading the reviews, we knew what to expect when we first used the grate. Our first use over the fire, the fire charred off the paint. But what do you expect when you paint steel for high temperature uses. I think it was stupid of Texsport to paint it. There is no need for them to paint the grate because most of the complaints are about the paint coming off. There is no functional purpose for it. The second thing that happened with the grate was it did warp a little bit after being over the fire for an extended period of time. We fixed it by just placing it upside down on the ground and it went back to its' original shape. These two problems aren't complaints, they are just so others know what to expect. Our only regret was not buying a bigger size. Some of the campsites in Wisconsin have round fire pits while others have square pits.

It folds easy for packing and has held up through multiple uses ...
It's a fire grate, nothing fancy, but I've cooked many a meal on it. From grilling burgers and brats to using it to support my cast iron cookware for more complex meals. I can fit a 15" skillet and my dutch oven, or the skillet and a griddle for cooking breakfast. It folds easy for packing and has held up through multiple uses now.

This grill is amazing, compact enough for our needs
After recalling last summer's camping trip and our attempt to get by with placing a cheap grill-rack over the camp fires (result: FAIL. The grill was nowhere big enough to balance across the fire pit, so we had to make a make-shift teepee for it out of our metal roasting sticks. Which, result: FAIL again), I panicked and started looking for a REAL camping grill. And oh yes. Yes. This grill is amazing, compact enough for our needs. The 24"x16" was just what we needed, and worked both for smaller fire pits that the top could just rest on, or larger pits where you can put one of the grill legs in and the other out of the pit. It also held up to a week of campfire cooking, marshmallow drips, baked bean spills, being accidentally stepped on when not in use, etc. We followed another reviewer's tip and kept the box for the grill, which proved to be perfect for packing it back up.Other reviewers were concerned about the paint, but we didn't have any issues or paint transfer problems that I noticed. The grill does, however, heat up relatively quickly, so with our first use we were a little concerned of whether or not the middle would just drop out, but nothing happened, not even a little warping. We also didn't wash it before first use, but we were cooking in pots and pans.

CANNOT BE USED AS A DIRECT GRILL
Bought this grill with the intention to grill meats while camping. Received it today, and in the small fine print in the box it states " this product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and/or other reproductive harm". Returning this asap.

Good for pots and pans, not food
Even though the product description talks of a "grilling surface" and shows pictures of food being cooked on it, I would definitely not cook open food on it. The black paint comes off with steel wool cleaning and likely becomes part of your food with the fire's high heat. Did not have a hygienic feel to it at all. Works well as cooking surface for fry pans, pots, coffee percolators, etc. but the paint removal with cleaning was off putting. Would much prefer a stainless steel version that was more multifunctional.

Don't waste your money on the flimsy one when you can ...
For the price of this item, you can only get a very poorly made over-the-fire cooking grill. This one is HEAVY DUTY for the same price as the one in Canadian Tire. Don't waste your money on the flimsy one when you can get this grill which is perfect.

Super sturdy. Used it with the legs folded flat cause our campfire had a cover/grill thingy on it. It worked well that way. Will be good for years to come. Glad I went with this instead of a cheap flimsy one.

poor paint, large metal slivers)
Avoid - subpar (flimsy, poor paint, large metal slivers). Basically, assembled reflects a "slapped" together, "just get it outta here", "I hate my job" kinda way - essentially the complete disregard for QC is blatant. Did I mention to avoid this at all costs?

Good for motorized camping but not backpacking
Rugged and heavy duty but also heavy. Good for car or snowmobile, ATV, mechanized camping. Also good for kayaking or canoeing but a little too big on a lot too heavy for backpacking.
