Excellent SSD, Great Performance After Finding the Right Enclosure and Cable
I bought the WD_BLACK 8TB SN850X NVMe SSD to use with the UGREEN 80Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure and connected it to my M4 Max Mac Studio. At first, I noticed fast transfer speeds, but after transferring a few large files, the speed dropped significantly. Unplugging and reconnecting the enclosure temporarily fixed it, but the issue kept happening. I suspected the problem was the UGREEN enclosure since Western Digital drives have always been reliable for me. I returned the UGREEN and replaced it with the OWC Express 1M2 80Gb/s Enclosure. Transfer speeds were excellent, but the drive started disconnecting a couple of minutes after startup. The included USB-C cable was also too short. I replaced it with the OWC 0.8M Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) Cable, and that completely solved the disconnection issue. Now everything works flawlessly, with consistent speeds of around 5800 MB/s write and 5600 MB/s read, and the enclosure stays cool during long transfers. It took some troubleshooting, but I’m very satisfied with the final setup.

Excellent drive with excellent performance, but...
First these drivers are flawless, I have four of them. I can't recommend them enough .... at the prices I paid for them. As recently as September, these 8tb drives were around $530-$545. (Those are the prices I paid for 4 drives across 3 different orders over the course of 4 months. Now thx to *gestures vaguely* they want $889 for the same drive. That is an insane increase on par with recent RAM prices. If you absolutely have to get one, then I still recommend this drive over any of the other 8tb m.2 drives out there, but know that you are paying well over what these drives should cost. If you can wait, consider it.

Pricey and super fast, gen4 good enough for gaming PC, 8TB enough for a long time
Pricey but not too much more than double the 4TB option. Plenty fast too even though it's gen4 and not gen5, I don't think I'm able to max out its speed in daily use including when I downloaded and installed a bunch of Steam games onto it. As of now, I've used about 1TB of its capacity. I recommend this to folks who are building a custom water loop because those are hard to open up for upgrades without tearing down the loop. For me, I wanted 8TB so I wouldn't need to worry. I filled up a 2TB drive quickly last time, and 8TB seemed to be good enough for a few years. My guess is that this drive is faster than necessary for most use, but given its 8TB capacity there aren't slower/cheaper options yet. I'm happy I chose this one, even though there was an 8TB gen5 option available (that one costing a bit over $1k).

Be Ware
I Bought this WDdrive on 11/22/24 from Amazon. From the very beginning I’ve had issues with it's performance. It appears that you can not run this drive at or near the rated speed for extended periods or it will over heat and throttle itself no matter what you do to try and keep it cool. I installed it in the ACASIS 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure after only a few weeks of dealing with the throttling issue. I assumed this would resolve the problem since it has a built in fan, WRONG. If I try to do a large read write operation such as a full back up or adding a large photo shoot it will over heat, every time. The worst issue that makes me believe that this drive has a serious design defect was when I connected it to the Thunderbolt port on my new ROG desktop. With the drive just plugged in, and idling, no data being written or read, it would still overheat. I discovered that I could not use it on the thunderbolt port on the ROG at all or would overheat quickly. Even when in throttle mode the temp continued to climb. At that point I decided to only use it on the USB 3.2 ports but still continued to have issues with overheating. On July 2 the drive failed while doing minor image edits in Lightroom. The message shown in the image below read. “S.M.A.R.T. Test warning” “WD_Black SN850X 8000GB” “SMART Status is Bad. Please backup and replace the device”. Then the real fun began. I switched over to my back up system and contacted Sandisk Support. Surprise WD sold there SSD product line to Sandisk. After I sent Sandisk the requested images of the front and back of the drive, and error message, they said ship it back and they would replace it. Well they didn’t. After they got it, they said the drive was damaged and they would not replace it. To make matters worse they did not want to return my disk to me. I had to make make multiple calls and chats to force the return of the drive. Because of the terrible product performance and very sketchy support. I strongly advise against buying this product or any other from WD or Sandisk. One final comment: I have since noticed that the WD_BLACK 2TB SN770 that I am using as my internal D: drive is having the same issue.

Incredibly Fast
I am using the 8TB version of this SSD (without a heatsink) inside a Sabrent Rocket RGB enclosure (no active fan/ventilation) to back up large video project files from DaVinci Resolve. The days of watching the "progress bar" creep slowly across the screen are gone...this thing is plenty fast for me. I read some reviews of this particular enclosure becoming very warm when used in this manner but that has not been my experience. Instead, after an initial backup of over 1TB of video files, I noticed minimal warming of the aluminum case. At this price ($799), I bought a second 8TB SSD as a hedge against anticipated NAND memory price increases in 2026. I couldn't be happier with this SSD.

Not so robust with large file copying - crashes and/or looses files.
Works great as long as one does not copy very large files or sets of files. Can't copy my 4Tb "D" drive files unless I copy main folders one at a time. This is not about temperature overload. Windows comes back with something like 'device not found'. There appear to be some other Windows issues wherein file indexing gets lost. No data loss so far but . . .

Great SSD!! Good experience with Amazon Resale.
Great SSD, was a great value at time of purchase, and love how much space it added to our computer. Would buy again if within budget. Bought from Amazon resale and drive arrived with <10 POH & 1TBW and verified as authentic in Samsung Magician.
