rotary splitting wedge

I bought this wedge as a Christmas present for my son. Last year, we had to have a very large sycamore felled, and he has struggled to split some of the thicker sections, which are almost 1m thick. Because of its helicoidal shape, this wedge twists to open up the log and this saves a lot of time and effort. Now we are clearing these logs, and getting them stowed away for our use in winters to come. Not such hard work and a job finished faster, so splitting logs is now a much more enjoyable task.

I had 7 large pine trees cut down 18 months ago, some of the trees split well on felling, but others were unmoved by a decent (Fiskars) splitting axe. After seasoning they were just as impossible to split.Going on Roger (etc)'s excellent review, I purchased the wedge (£16.75 inc. postage) and was amazed by the results, just using a lump hammer.The rounds were about 18" diameter and 13" long, as long as you avoided the knots they split fairly easily. Just love the sound of that first crack of the wood.Probably the best 17 quid I've spent. No chipping of the metal surface, it should finish the job.

The Silicon head is designed to be replaced and does deteriorate very quickly. unfortunately no stockist will supply spare heads (at least not near me). Consequently you'd be better off with a cheaper but more durable wedge.
