Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer born in Boston in 1809. His work has influenced literature in the United States and around the world. At a very young age, he was orphaned, fostered and then moved to live in Virgina. Unable to support himself, he enlisted in the United States Army; only 18 but claiming to be 22.
