Should the power light be on when operating?

When testing the lights flick on & off. I am not sure if they come on during normal operation (ie when there is CO gas in the air) but probably not as the alarm is the sound, & not the lights. So if the test button works (lights flick on & alarm sounds), the alarm is operational. If battery gets weak, alarm & lights will go on. If you have the instructions, all details are there (this is from memory of the instructions).
