Practical tips for every picture-taking moment of your life!
This book is the bomb dot com. Leela has practical tips for every picture-taking moment of your life, from styling food to capturing nature to the whacky and wonky! Each section of the book features easy-to-follow bullet points to improve aspects of you pictures, complemented by examples from Leela's own Instagram account. I especially appreciate the #FridayFollow feature, wherein Leela suggests other Instagram accounts to follow for inspiration, gathering tips from those photographers as well. The best part of the book are the assignments Leela has created. Each gives you a specific task to put the skills she's teaching into practice. They make for fun photographic field trips! I highly recommend this book for the Instagram enthusiast or amateur photographer looking to up their game. We're already training our baby girl so she'll be a future fabulous photographer like Leela!

A Friendly Crash Course in Using Your Phone's Camera
ISBN 9781250182210This friendly, reassuring title was a bit too broad and introductory for my purposes. Instead of its namesake, "Styling for Instagram," I felt it was more about how to use your phone's camera and how to coax the best out of your subjects (often strangers) and surroundings. Indeed, there are good tips for taking good photos. On that score, the rather brief Chapter 9, "Hacks and Tips," was my favorite, especially the section on easy contrast and brightness adjustments and equipment hacks. Otherwise, the 1st chapter, "Where to Start," which feels more like an introduction, is really where Instagram-specific tips are to be found. The 5 paragraphs on hashtags was helpful, as were the 5 paragraphs on editing. However, even those were lacking in detail. If Instagram has word limits, or image limits, or if there are ways to automatically queue up posts to go out daily, or if those who do post daily (as she recommends) want to know how to be more efficient in managing the prepwork--these are the types of questions that would go unanswered with this book. I was also curious about how one styles the written aspects of posts. And, for example, how do you handle trolls/hecklers in Instagram? The author assumes you're just setting up your account so I figured there would be more general guidance about what I might encounter once I start posting. Finally, there was one sentence, which I can't find for the life of me, about the fact that as you post you are creating a collection of images in your feed and that those need to have artistic flow and contrast. This piqued my interest! I would have loved a do's /don'ts with examples so I could see how even the selection/arrangement/sequencing of posts can enhance/detract from the audience's experience. Instead of only beautiful photography, I would have benefited from the "bad" as well---with the "improved" version right beside it.

Great even for professionals!
Amazing. Perfect to get them valuable tips on promoting through social media. For a designer like myself, itβs so important to take them all important photographs which really show work to the best standards. Iβd recommend to any university/MA student.

I expected more about styling
Not exactly what I expected. It's not about STYLING it's about examples of photos for instagram. So - yes you can find a lot of creative ideas but it's not about how to preapare photos for IG and not about styling.

Slightly Disappointed
I bought the book because I wanted to learn how to compose more professional Instagram posts. I wanted to know why does a post about knitting so often have to include tanned legs with branded footwear, and a mug of tea/coffee? Well, the book certainly is bursting with examples, some of which I recognised from social media, but there was not enough explanation for me.I think if you are visually astute already, eg a photographer, or graphics bod, then you probably won't need this book. If you are not, but want to up-grade your visual media, maybe some more explanation would have been worth including for slow-coaches like me.That said, the pictures are for the most part a delight to browse if you are in COVID19 lockdown and you have absolutely nothing else to do.
