Eyes Wide Open! 100 Years of Leica Photography

A beautiful acquisition.
WOW! What an exquisitely reproduced book. This thing is huge so you will need strong arms and an equally strong coffee table! It is printed on a very heavy grade of Matt paper and the photographs are intertwined with the text in the early part of the book. There are copious reproductions of original magazine and book illustrations and an unusual surprise in the middle of the book. There is plenty of text to read as this is not purely a book of photographs. The images are printed in a warm black and white and in sepia where appropriate, all have a nice semi gloss look against the Matt White of the page. There are also many colour reproductions. Some of the images are reproduced quite small when they are accompanying text but those standing alone are of a good size. The comprehensive guide to the development of the Leica by Oskar Barnack and associates is fascinating as are the Chapters on the photographers that used them. This is a book that you can dip in and out of and has a useful biography of all the photographers featured. It is packed with some of the greatest images of the 20th century by its finest exponents alongside lots of rarely reproduced work. I think it is worth every penny of the purchase price and then some. It's a must have book for the library of anyone with even a passing interest in the development of 35mm photography through the invention of the minature camera I.e the Leica. Grab it whilst you can.

A fabulous book!
A fabulous book! The history of photography with Leica - just like the history of Leica or more - is a great part of history of photography of the XX and XXI century. I'd like so much see portuguese photographs who use Leica - I know they use - and others portuguese or not, who photographed Portugal. More than this, is a fabulous book! Like a Leica.

Lovely book, terrible translation
This is a lovely book, beautifully printed, full of hundreds of excellent photographs. But the translation of the text is abominable. I really wanted to read about the history of Leica, but the text is so poor that it’s painful to read. For a book this important, and this expensive, they should have paid for a real translator.
