Roberts PLAY11 FM/DAB/DAB+ Digital Portable Radio, Black

Our first scan for DAB stations was disappointing, but on trying again in a different part of the house we got all that we needed, and more. The radio picks up everywhere in the house (not sure why it didn't find stations first time).It's compact, easy to use, good reception (see above) and does everything that we want. It has DAB+ so it's a bit future proofed and good value for money.

We live around 35 miles from the main DAB transmitter and have tried various DAB and DAB+ radios over the years. None of them have worked well with continuous drop outs on both BBC and independent channels - even when using a roof mounted VHF/DAB aerial. This is the first one which actually works as it should using the attached telescopic aerial.We are very pleased and have now purchased a second one and can enjoy the much better choice of channels around the house.Battery life is often an issue with DAB but this radio runs on good quality rechargeable ones when necessary but we mostly use the USB power supply socket. It won't recharge those batteries but makes it a mains radio when plugged in to a USB C cable from a phone charger or 13amp socket plate with USB outlets.Very pleased so far as reception so good in a fringe area however, I can only speak as I find.

I've started getting more into radio since moving out and living alone, I wanted a nice battery powered radio to use in my kitchen.This is a very nice looking radio, and I'm a huge fan of how simple and easy the user interface is. The build quality feels solid, all the buttons are decent quality. Only thing I don't like is how the battery cover is very hard to open once batteries are installed. The radio reception is excellent, haven't had any issues with finding stations or dropping out.Battery life with decent rechargables (2500mAh) is about a week of usage (4 hours daily). I saw some reviewers complaing about this - but compared to bluetooth speakers I have which need charging every few days I'm more than happy with this battery life.Audio quality is... okay. I wouldn't go quite as far to call it tinnny but it's definitely lo-fi and devoid of bass. It's still servicable (and I was still dancing in my kitchen to this radio!), but it was this aspect that made me upgrade to the Roberts Rambler Uno which is a similar size but night and day difference in terms of audio quality. But that's to be expected when the Rambler Uno is over double the price (£110).I still really love this radio, but it's become my "background" radio now I have on in bed or when I'm at my computer which I think it's perfect for. For the audio quality you get I think the RRP of £50 (I paid £45) is too steep, but at the time of writing this review it's on sale on Amazon for £30 which I think is a perfect price, considering it's still a very nicely designed radio with a well thought out user interface.

Good radio, easy to use. Battery use not so good as earlier model.

I already own for 5yrs the previous version of this radio [Play RDS] which, although DAB/DAB+ and FM, would not tune into my 2nd favourite channel [Classic FM after it 'upgraded to DAB+].So, I decided to try this.CON: very short aerial [although its dimensions are the same as my existing version. As a consequence NOT ONE DAB channel is received clearly: despite being placed in the exact same place.Secondly I am NOT impressed with the very small controls/buttons. The advertised display is not clear and as someone who has both sight and manual issues, not very useful.That is my major complaint. I cannot use this at a convenient position on my nearby coffee table because not one channel [either DAB or FM ] is clearly heard- although it is in the exact same place as my existing Roberts model.Moving around helps, but that is not the point for me.As a 'portable ' model I'll try it elsewhere-- but this is a very big disappointment for me.PRO: there are no 'pro's' yet. Sorry, its' basic function is a great disappointment. Its' exceedingly small buttons are awkward for me.

Easy to use and for the size a great sound. Bought for my elder sister who wanted a mobile radio with DAB stations, and easy to use. Came with a usb power cable but no plug which you have to buy, if you don't already have one. Other than that, highly recommended Roberts radio.

A good mains or portable radio but let down by the battery arrangement. Takes replaceable batteries only. Doesn’t include recharging capability. No indication of battery life when operating on batteries. Just shuts down dead abruptly when batteries are too low. The cover on the battery compartment is a very tight fit and I cannot open it without slipping the blade of a knife along the edge to start it sliding open. I think we’re now expected to stream radio on our phones when we want true portability.
