Pure, White and Deadly: How Sugar Is Killing Us and What We Can Do to Stop It : Yudkin, John, Lustig, Robert: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Pure white and deadly - A lot of true in this book title. Almost 3 years ago my Mum passed away on heart failure and diabetes. With Mum wasn't just the sugar it was in general a poor diet all together. Home-made delicious cakes, home-made cooked meals with lots of fat and meat, smoking, etc. Anyway as I want to give up table sugar for more than one reason, I was looking for a book about sugar, written by a doctor, and not by any ordinary person. Here I am buying this one and I am glad that I bought it. It is easy to read and says exactly what I have been reading on-line for a long, long time. Our body doesn't need this crap because it’s cleaver enough to produce its own sugar, energy, from the food that we are eating. I needed to have a book like this handy to make made deal with occasionally sugar cravings which I am getting for more than one reason like: thinking about that choco ice-cream (usually a good quality one, without mono and diglice.in ) especially when my hormones are playing, seeing my husband eating his ice cream on weekend after lunch (while seating on the sofa watching TV), etc. Almost 5 years ago I started to workout. In the last 3 years I started to look after what I am eating and although I dropped the consummation of sugar from cakes and CO. from twice a week to ones a week and sometimes just 2-3 times in 4 weeks, I still wanted to know more about the reaction of our body to sugar. I read a lot on-line and now I know that the home-made banana ice-cream gives me the sugar that I want but the healthier one, fructose and will also satisfy my ice cream cravings. I have more than one reason to give up table sugar for good: I have more or less my Mum genes, my blood sugar is normal without eating in the morning so why the need of extra sugar??, I am on perimenopause and anyone knows that with this the risk of diseases is rising, I am taking my sugar from the carbs that I am eating, and not to say that the banana ice cream is very delicious and I am kind of addicted to it. In addition to this I am taking my sugar just from veg and fruits. I am not eating honey because it is also sugar (with some benefits, but still sugar). If you, like me and other reviewers here are interested in your own health and want to give up table sugar, this book is for you too. For me is good to have it handy because next time when I will think about buying that Choco ice cream I will reach for the book instead for the clothes to put them on and go out to buy ice cream. 5 Stars. Review: He nails it on every subject - I got the book couple of days ago and read it directly. My discloser is that I am a big fan Dr Lustig youtube talks. Sugar the bitter truth. There are 2 of them. And if you have not seen them, do it. I been wanting to read this book since I heard about it in his first talk. At that time it was still out of print. Took me time to finally buy it since I heard it was in print again with the forwards by dr Lustig. I am by now after reading the book, just as Lustig claim also an Yukdin disciple. In the book does the writer slowly and steadily explain his and other scientists have found when researching the effect of high sugar intake. He points out what is known but also where more research is needed. The research presented is mostly done on both rats and humans. And he points out, that just because that it possible to see an effect on a mouse. Does that not mean that it is possible to transfer the findings to humans. That is why testing on humans is important. But do explain that when you can see similar effect on other animals like pigs and birds is more likely that one would see it in humans to. The book is easy reading for anyone. I do not consider it to be necessary to have scientific mind or knowledge to understand him. He takes his time to explain everything very well. To me this is one of two most important books ever written about nutrition. The other one is " Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health " by Gary Taubes. He also have very good youtube clips.

Worth a read if you are trying to get off the white stuff.
This is a must read book if, like me, you are trying to get off sugar - I blame my mother who was a child of the 1930's and thought everything tasted better with sugar - it did - it still does..... but she died from pancreatic cancer! Anyway, the book is good, if not a little heavy going in parts for the non-scientists amongst us, although he does do his best to describe in lay-mans terms what he is talking about. The book was originally written in the early 1970's and updated in the mid 1980's..... which is years ago in terms of medical research. What I would love is somebody to do a bit of a 'makeover' of the book and where the author points to incomplete research or research not yet done, that somebody could do an update with a 'proven' or 'not proven', or anything to support or refute some of the suppositions made in this book. What is certain is that the white stuff ain't good for us, that it never will be - he suggests it could take thousands of generations for the body to adapt to sugar in our diet - he suggests that cancers (and many other deadly illnesses) are the body not yet adapting to sugar!

Still relevant today
Written by a real gentleman and a true pioneer who wasn't afraid to make conclusions that went against the mainstream. So many times while reading this I thought, ' That would make a good quote to post on social media ' as his experiments and conclusions are so relevant today. Low carb diet being beneficial, the way big corporations control the narrative, are just some examples. All written in a friendly, courteous way that is not too heavy. It's such a shame he didn't make a massive impact like the low fat proponents did. The only thing is there are lots of mentions of experiments that involve feeding animals in the lab lots of sugar etc, so just be warned if you are sensitive.

Everyone should read this book a least once - and then decide what they want to do about sugar. Apart from being very informative, it's also nicely written and entertaining. The author remains objective, always citing sources and facts. It's a bit technical sometimes, but everything is clearly explained, and it's very readable even for a non-specialist.

I have struggled to conquer my sugar cravings for years. This book not only talks about sugar as being the cause of just about any disease in the body, incl. heart attacks, cancer, eye problems, weight gain, and premature aging, but presents ample proof and research. Apparently, there is a difference between white refined sugar, also called sucrose, and carbohydrates in general. Not all carbohydrates are bad. I do not use used refined sugar but was not aware that there is also sugar in cookies, chocolate, and most packaged products, and this sugar adds up just as much as eating it by the spoonful. It has been the most enlightening book about the dangers of sugar I have read so far and would recommend it to everybody. Most of us are addicted to sugar and don't even know it. We just suffer the consequences in the form of disease.

A must read for those who are diabetic and other related health issues ~ High blood pressure and so on. Dr. Yudkin in the 1970's warned us about the woes of sugar. Harvard Medical School at the time said it was fat in our diets, not sugar making us all sick. But in 2017 Harvard has now admitted that they were paid off by the sugar companies in those days to lie on their behalf and tell everyone their findings were that dietary fat was the cause of all our evils. Now Dr. Lustig who has put a forward in this book, has taken up where Yudkin left off. His book Fat Chance and Hacking of the American Mind (both found on Amazon) along with his DVD "Sweet Revenge" explains what sugar does to our bodies ~ causing visceral fat to accumulate around our internal organs causing diabetes, NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disorder) high blood pressure and so on. This book is the basic starting block and that now that it is out in the open about sugar and what it does. RIP Dr. Yudkin.
