Love Math in Focus, very advanced and instructional, the workbooks go hand in hand for the extra practice, great product
I homeschool my daughter and have been using the Math in Focus Curriculum for the last two years. My daughter is pretty advanced and a fast paced learner when it comes to Math, however, these books, are challenging enough even for her. Judging by the materials my son brings home from public school this curriculum is very advanced verses public school systems in my state. The workbook, in which this review is about (since I got a bit off track) fits in perfectly with the curriculum and gives plenty of practice items and if I'm not mistaken an end of the semester quiz/test at the end to make sure that everything did stick. Our homeschool approach with the workbooks is to only do a couple of exercises on items she excels at and then take more time on the things that don't stick as well for her. I would highly recommend this for any homeschool family out there or even a public school who wants a more challenging and advanced curriculum. We actually did first grade through both first and second grade and on my daughter's end of the year standardized testing she scored the highest scores in math that's possible. I would also recommend using Khan Academy, which is a free online tutorial for Math and other subjects to help reinforce items your child has a hard time with.

Good program
I have used Math In Focus with my autistic grandson for the past four years and we are on our fifth year. Teaches in a very basic way with plenty of room on the pages to do the work. Highly recommend this program.

Daughter enjoys this book
My daughter enjoys working through this book. We are completing it as a supplement to her public school experience. She can work independently for much of the book, as the directions are usually pretty straight forward. I offer her explanations and support when a new concept is unclear to her. She says she doesn’t like the thinking cap (brain teaser) pages, but I love them. They offer a great way to manipulate and apply the skills being practiced. I walk her through the logic to extend her understanding.

We have used this curriculum for 4 years.
We have used this program for an easy, self-paced math student and a struggling math student. This curriculum is great. There are several things missing at 1st and 2nd grade level when comparing with STAR testing in CA. My DD tested above proficient so no worries when combining the two. Overall, I am very happy and will not switch anytime soon. We use the k-5 manipulatives as well.

she finds the work relatively easy and it reinforces work covered in the last month ...
We're using this workbook as a supplement to her Singapore curriculum in school. She does the workbook exercises after school a few days a week, but only after it has been introduced and taught by her teacher. This approach seems to work really well, versus introducing NEW material before it's been covered in school. This way, she finds the work relatively easy and it reinforces work covered in the last month at school. I think you could use this workbook also over the summer as a review to material covered during the most recent academic year, but we like timing her studies more closely to make sure it becomes part of her long term memory and to avoid frustration. As a result, she's continues to love math.

Fantastic curriculum
I love this curriculum. It makes it easy to understand the concepts. The teacher guide is useful. At this level you can work with out the teacher manual however as you move to the higher grades and may need the answer keys for backup. The only downside to using this curriculum is the cost of the teacher edition .
