Review: Comprehensive and easy to understand - Excellent help for uni work Review: A Second Look at Chemistry - I'm retired, and lightly bored as a result. So, I spend my large amounts of spare time having a serious second look at the stuff I had to study at school and university back in the last century. I have been taking a big sweep through numerical maths on my computer (mostly statistics, which has blossomed with R -- why wasn't this not available when I was twenty or so!). Lately I decided to tackle chemistry, and I bought a couple of Dummies books to get started. This one, Chemistry for Dummies, is the one to begin with, and it is nearly perfect; I can't recommend the book enough. If you want to take a look at chemistry, this is a wonderful introduction. John Moore, the author has done a lovely job. I shall be chasing his other books in the future.

Awesome!
Chemistry was my only D grade for my GCSEs in 1996 so I wanted to correct my erroneous ways as a teenager which I believe I have accomplished. Chemistry is not too hard, although I am only studying for general knowledge. To truly grasp the mathematics and equations in detail would be a lot harder. The book is written well and is very clear. I have learned so much that I did not know before hand, such as atomic structure and the difference between nuclear fission and fusion. I highly recommend this book!

Fantastic book!
Chemistry for Dummies is a very useful book at finding advanced concepts of chemistry. I highly recommend this book to people who are either really into chemistry or are doing chemistry as a subject. It does give you a good helping hand with coursework or homework. It doesn't specify modules for chemistry but it gives advanced explanations on specific areas.

Ideal starting point
I wish John T. Moore had been my chemistry teacher at school! I bought this book as I was looking for a gentle introduction into chemistry. Back at school, chemistry was a weak point, for one reason or another topics wouldn't stick and I left thinking that it was a horrid subject. About 100 pages in, a lot of familiar concepts are now a lot clearer, with seamless steps forward into things that I'd not seen before. My only criticism of this book (and it's entirely unfair!) is that as a maths grad I wish there was more maths; though I understand why it's been kept to a minimum!

Good basic intro
This book serves as a good basic introduction to chemistry. I believe, although it is not made that clear, that it is oriented towards an introductory U.S. chem course; as such, it has an extensive section on pollution that seemed unnecessary. It also has some sections dedicated to top ten chemicals, chemists, etc.. I would have preferred more "straight" chemistry, and these later sections I found less helpful. Still, it is a good introductory book and I would recommend it to anyone who is not that familiar with the subject.

For the first time ever I understand Chemistry!
I am a mature student about to start an access course to Medicine and found this book extremely clear and helpful. The college had given me a chemistry booklet to prepare for the course but i was very confused reading it and felt panicked. However, john t moore uses humour and a very gradual increase of difficulty, slowly building on previously gained knowledge and understanding, so that i managed to stay on board and actually felt excited about chemistry for the first time ever!

Certainly not aimed for dummies, it's a pretty daunting read.

Nice book with very clear explanations ! I would have been happier if it had covered more chemistry topics ... perhaps for another bok ...
