After Years of Testing Other Brands
Over the last two decades, I’ve been on what feels like an endless cycle of testing and rotating through every conceivable deodorant and antiperspirant available—clinical strength, prescription-level, natural, aluminium-free, roll-ons, sprays, sticks—you name it. As someone who’s always sweated more than average (think sweating even when sitting still in a cool room), finding a product that could keep up without irritating my skin became less of a search and more of a long-term personal health project. The Mitchum Men Triple Odor Defense Stick in Ice Fresh genuinely changed that trajectory in a way that’s hard to overstate. The impact of this stick became especially clear after years of frustration with products that either underdelivered or outright hurt my skin. Dove Men+Care, for instance, seemed promising with its moisturising claim, but after just a week or two, I’d develop painful rashes under my arms—raw, itchy, red skin that would sting with even the gentlest water contact. That wasn’t a one-off; it happened repeatedly with other “sensitive skin” options too, including Nivea and Right Guard. I also tried going the aluminium-free route with natural brands like Salt of the Earth and Native, but they offered barely any protection. Within hours, I’d smell myself, and worse, so could others. For someone who works long hours around people, that's not just uncomfortable—it’s mortifying. When I started testing Mitchum, I didn’t expect much. I assumed it would either cause the same irritation or not last more than a few hours. I was wrong on both counts. I ran it through my usual gauntlet of real-life tests: applying after shaving, long days working from home with heating on full blast, stressful presentations, summer commutes on packed public transport, nights out dancing, and even hikes in 25°C heat. Every time, it held up better than anything else I’ve used. I noticed I wasn’t checking myself in the mirror anymore. I wasn’t carrying a backup spray in my bag. I wasn’t getting that end-of-day mustiness under my shirts. It just worked. Quietly and consistently.Even more surprisingly, my skin didn’t rebel. I’ve now used Mitchum daily for almost a year straight, and not once has it caused a rash, itching, or tightness. That’s unheard of for me. The application is smooth—no dragging or stickiness—and it dries quickly enough to get dressed without awkward wait times. The scent, “Ice Fresh,” is clean, not overly masculine or synthetic-smelling, and never clashes with cologne. What I especially appreciate is that it controls odour before it begins. With some deodorants, I’d feel dry but could still catch a whiff of sweat if I was stressed or moving around a lot. With Mitchum, it’s like it neutralises the whole process entirely. From an ingredients standpoint, it’s not perfect—it does contain aluminium, and it isn’t free of synthetic fragrance—but for someone prioritising performance and comfort, it’s balanced. The formula includes Aluminium Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex GLY, which is highly effective at reducing sweat output without the harshness of aluminium chloride. The absence of alcohol is a game-changer for sensitive skin. That was one of the triggers I eventually identified in products like Sure or Sanex: alcohol was inflaming freshly shaved skin even when I didn’t realise it at the time.Routine matters too. I’ve found that the best results come from applying Mitchum to completely dry skin at least 20 minutes after showering. If I shave my underarms (which I sometimes do to reduce moisture build-up), I wait at least an hour before applying. I also avoid applying right before bed unless I’ve cooled down and dried off completely, as that’s when the pores can absorb the product too deeply and potentially react.Long-term, this is the only stick I’ve used that I actually look forward to reapplying. It’s small, travels well, doesn’t crumble or melt in heat, and lasts me roughly 3–4 weeks with daily use. The stick format avoids the mess of sprays and the risk of triggering breathing issues (which I've had with aerosol options), and there's no risk of white streaks on dark clothing. There are still a few small cons. If you reapply over a layer that hasn't been fully removed, it can feel heavy or pasty. It also won’t be for those trying to avoid aluminium entirely, and the size could be bigger for the price. But those are small prices to pay for what has become the most reliable product in my daily grooming routine. It’s not an overstatement to say this stick gave me back confidence I didn’t even realise I’d lost after years of battling odour, sweat, and sensitive skin flare-ups. Mitchum didn’t just work better—it made my day-to-day life easier, less anxious, and far more comfortable. For me, that’s the gold standard.

Smells nice and does work but packaging feels excessive
Overall the deodorant is fine, it's fresh smelling and works over a day no problem.BUT...The packing that gets thrown away at the end does seem hugely excessive and it's all plastic of course. The amount of deodorant within the pack feels a bit stingy - it's about 2.5 cms worth which is about 25% of the size of the packaging. You can see through the rest of the packaging and it's basically empty space except for the screw mechanism to push the deodorant out. If it had more deodorant within it would be better and less wasteful on the packaging. If there was a refill it would also help as I'm sure the container part would work fine for a long time but instead it'll just get binnedI don't think I can buy these again on the basis of being so wasteful. I'll be taking more care next time.
