More Compressed than I thought.
Purchased the 3.3 lb block. As far as sphagnum goes, I've purchased a brand that came in a 1.2 lb block. One that came in a 2.2 lb block, same brand as this, as well as this; 3.3 lb block. The original block, different brand, was excellent. Long fibers, low bits and pieces good color and fluffy.Of this brand the 2.2 lb bale came in a 15-in (ish) by 15 in (ish) by 6-8" block. This bale, containing 10 or so more quarts and another lb of sphagnum is actually compressed to less than half of the size of that. The block itself was probably 8x8x10 or something, going off memory. The benefit to the 2.2 lb block, it wasn't overly compressed so it was easy to pull moss off in sheets About a quarter of that block would do three to four of the moss poles I do. When naturally decompressed, it would fluff easily and remain in Long fibers. It DID have quite a lot of the smaller bits, many more than previous. I just use those in my mixes that need high water retention. It had a good smell but did have several sticks and pieces of plastic twine. I would recommend it.At time of writing originally, I had not broken into this one yet, but since editing, but it appears VERY compressed. It's not necessarily true the first block I bought was fairly compressed as well, not as compressed as this but it was more compressed in the previous block, and that block actually had less of the little bits and the broken strands then the block of this brand, That was less compacted. All in all, the fibers were all average at least three plus inches, so I think it worked out. It does compress a bit more than the previous batch. I don't like to use the little bits as they will come out through the holes in the moss pole, so I tend to kind of wad them in with the longer strands and stuff then in the middle, or again, use in soil.I've actually used all the block now, and am getting more. When allowed to expand, there is physically more sphagnum there, but it's not as fluffy, and it has more fines and broken stuff. I'm torn. I don't know if the increase makes up for it, and since the stuff is a bit finer., It'll compact a bit more, and is easier to over pack the poles, but not a lot, so in the end you really still only get a bit more. I have started adding bark to my moss poles to add something hard for roots to wrap into and onto, that takes up space and helps airate. Now I see they have a 4.4 lb block. I'm worried it's just as compressed. When you over compress this stuff you lose volume. It gets smaller and packs more.

Good quality, consistency and color
Used this as a layer above rocks in a terrarium to facilitate drainage beneath the soil. Expanded to a large volume when pulled apart by hand. Nice color consistency from light green to brownish.Worked great to prevent soil from falling into rocks and looked much better than a filter layer.

Works well
I have been using this to propagate some plants and it has held the moisture very well! Also, it doesn’t have a bad smell, as you might expect in a damp substance. It worked well for the purposes I needed.

Ok for the price
The good:Lots of product. Far more then I was envisioning. Pretty close to photos. Color is pretty uniform. The not so good:It comes in a compressed brick. Need to soak in a lot of water to really use without tearing it up. As a result, if you only need a little bit, you’ll have to either find a way to break it up or rehydrate far more then necessary. The bad:Was shipped with just the plastic wrap and a shipping label. As a result, one edge was ripped open and maybe 1% of the material was just gone. The worst:Lots of non-sphagnum plant parts: multiple types of dried leaves, stems, and roots. Because of the compressed nature of the block, almost impossible to remove. If you’re using this for something decorative and don’t have the time to remove, would likely be a dealbreaker.Overall, it worked ok for my needs, hence the review, but will think twice before another purchase.

A lot more moss than it appears
If anything it sent the smell of dirt through my apartment very heavily and took a bit for it to go away

Dirty
So I buy lfs for my carnivore plants, I usually buy from supermoss but at the time I purchased this brand I couldn’t find supermoss anywhere and had a potting emergency so I grabbed this. It’s, not as nice as what I’m used to. The fibers don’t hold their shape, they just kinda melt together. The Real issue I had with it was I had been spoiled before, with rinsed and washed lfs and never having it affect the PPM or ph of my plants. But this batch, wow. I went to mix up some new soil today and on a whim tested straight outta the bag lfs with distilled water added. It registered 171ppm, 670 salts. 😳 if it was rinsed and clean I could like it, but after having to wet and wring it out this lfs looks about used up. Going back to supermoss, if this works for you that’s Awesome! It’s affordable, and it is long fiber spagham moss. I just don’t think ill get the wear from it like I did with my other brand, this stuff feels like it’s ready to fall apart into dust and I’d rather keep the couple years between repots thanks.

Moisture retention
We use this product on our hanging and wall baskets. This really is a game changer for keeping plants from drying out. This product insulates you open wire planters. It keeps the soil from eroding when watering snd the plants do much better in the heat, because of this added insulation, as i call it.
