Lovely movie
A deep, touching and very sweet story. All actors are sublime. It’s that kind of movie that you can see over and over again.

Nice movie
If you can get past Keira Knightly's coy cute singing presentation, this is a nice surprising and well acted movie. Mark Ruffalo is - as always - excellent. It's really an unbelievable premise, to (SPOILER) make an album in the open air and in New York back alleys and on rooftops, but it's ok. Park that reservation and enjoy a nice calm cool movie to watch over an evening when you want a nice story and no stress! Recommended.

Yeah! That's What I'm Talkin' About!
I loved this. It was a fairy-tale. Individual artist beats the big boys at their own game and comes to rule the world musically with a concept so brilliant I almost wish I could rip it off and record in various parts of London instead of going into studiosto record. Never mind, maybe one day.So, James Carden. I loathe him normally but in this case, he played the character of Steve really well. Keira Knightly on the other hand I did not loathe at all. I thought she played the part of Gretta really well. And like her, I hated Alan's arrangement of Lost Stars. And then there's Mark Ruffalo. I keep forgetting just how good an actor he is. In fact, in most of his films, I forget he's even acting and see this person on the screen, living his life around these other actors as if he were on his own personal The Truman Show. And then in the next film, he's someone else. This is no exception. I believe Dan is picking himself up from rock bottom and getting his life together all because he meets a musician at an open mic night. (And you know what folks, if there are any producers out there, this sort of thing really happens. Come along to a gig where I'm playing and you'll see for yourself and make us both rich.). Not only that though, all three of the actors who make up Dan's estranged family, and pretty much every actor playing a musician in the film did it brilliantly. On top of that, I loved the music. I only wish I could unwatch it so I could go back and watch it for the first time all over again.

even at rock bottom we have the ability to turn things around.
I also have the soundtrack of this album which is also excellent. I thought I'd reviewed this film a few months back but as most have mentioned the story line I'll talk about the music.People like myself maybe shocked to see Keira Knightley's as singer on her tracks. Adam Levine needs no introduction as front man for Maroon 5. Then there's Hailee Steinfeld Who plays Ruffolo's on screen daughter, who has been making noises as a singer. It sticks 2 fingers up to the music business and just how with a couple of wireless mic's, artists and the city as background noise you could make music. OK it may not be realistic but the internet has made so many artists. Forget stereotypes .Cee Lo Green makes a cameo appearance, which is good knowing how he started.I just think its a feel good movie that shows even at rock bottom we have the ability to turn things around.

Begin Again.
Another excellent little feel-good film from writer/director John Carney. Keira Knightley is a revelation as Gretta, who meets down-on-his-luck producer Dan (Mark Ruffalo) after breaking up with her singer/songwriter boyfriend and sets out to record her own material with his help.Knightley and Ruffalo make a good, convincing partnership at the centre of a very well-chosen cast; the music is pleasant and the film is beautifully shot around the streets of New York. It has some minor plot clichés and improbabilities – but this is an enjoyable film about the magic of music-making, not a gritty realist drama.Ignore the negative reviews from the soulless haters on this page – I expect most have probably never made any music in their lives. The UK DVD has presents a sharp 16:9 ratio print and subtitles in English are available; there's a 20 minute “Making of” documentary and four music videos consisting of montages from the film.

Just about watchable
Begin Again is not great, but it is not awful either, the music is decent but that is subjective. Begin Again is one of those laid back music/drama flicks that doesn't require much thinking, the performances are decent, Keira Knightley gives the best performance and pulls off the emotional scenes very well, the only wrong thing about this flick is the constant use of the F Word, it is not necessary and could have been excluded or at least toned down a lot.

Good film but not really a romance
I am currently on a trial of Prime. I must admit when I looked through the 'free' films, I wasn't that impressed but when I saw this film, I remembered when it came out but although I love Mark Ruffalo in films, I wasn't particularly a fan of Keira Knightley so I never watched it on release.. As it was free, I decided to give it a go and I actually really enjoyed it. Keira wasn't as annoying as I sometime find her and she did sing the songs herself and had learnt to play the guitar for the part. On Prime, it gives you 'trivia' about the film and I laughed when I found out that Ronan Keating had wanted Adam Levine's part!! I'm glad Adam won out! This isn't exactly a romance although I did think it was going to go that way between Greta and Dan's characters. Her boyfriend (Levine) has been unfaithful to her and his wife was unfaithful to him. He has since left the marital home, spends a lot of time drunk and rarely sees his teenage daughter and has just lost his job. But when he sees Greta perform in a club, he decides he wants to sign her to his old label.I like films with music in. While the music in this is not my usual taste, I still found it enjoyable. I didn't really see the point of James Corden's character but then I'm not particularly a fan of his. Mark Ruffalo was great as usual. It lost a star from me because I didn't like the ending. Not wishing to give too much away, but I was surprised with the choice romantically that Dan made at the end but I was glad about Greta's decision.

Music wins again!
Your classic love story gone sour. However, because of each character's love for music 🎶, they each gain a better understanding of what they want from life. Happy ending for all.
