Peripheral Neuropathy: What It Is and What You Can Do to Feel Better (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) Review: This complex disease is made easy to understand - Peripheral neuropathy can cause pain, numbness, weakness, and a host of other problems. As a sufferer of peripheral neuropathy I read the book with interest and hope. My feelings were rewarded as the book unfolded. The 10 chapters begin, appropriately, with “What is a Nerve?” and end, also appropriately, with “Living with Neuropathy.” The writing style is fluid and down to earth. This complex disease is made easy to understand, with chapters on Symptoms and on Causes of neuropathy written in layman’s terms. Diagnosis of neuropathy is described, beginning with the patient’s medical history, through the neurological exam, and finally to the various tests available. Treatment of neuropathy, with and without medications, is reported in the longest chapter in this short book. The book contains lots of practical suggestions that sufferers of neuropathy will very much appreciate. It is a must read for anyone trying to come to terms with this difficult illness. Review: Provides facts,(not opinions) which are helpful in understanding this disease ! - The single and most important facts that this author brings out in this book is the revelation that PN is inherited and for now, incurable. For anyone, (myself included,) who is inflicted with this disease, it presents the factual truth that there are no products, (pills, ointments or medical treatments. )that can result in a cure. Even trying to reduce the pain, cramps, swelling, etc brought about by this disease is very challenging !. Everyone who is so inflicted hopes that a medical outbreak will happen soon, however for now, it is what it is. Anyone with this medical disease woulf find this book worth obtaining

Clear and concise!
Good book to read and to keep on hand as a reference source. Peripheral neuropathy is difficult to describe to others in your life. This book will help you.

I recommend it to any person who wants to understand neuropathy ...
An outstanding book for those with peripheral neuropathy. Written for the patient in plain language that the reader can clearly understand. The author touches on and answers all the questions that the patient would normally ask and more. I recommend it to any person who wants to understand neuropathy and have their questions answered in plain language. The author is eminently qualified to write the book.

Peripheral Neuropathy is horrid!
I just keep looking and searching for something - ANYTHING - that will help with this curse that is Peripheral Neuropathy. I've read most of this book, and have not been able to glean anything new, although it is a well-written book. Good for someone who is perhaps recently diagnosed and has no previous knowledge of PN. My mother was a diabetic and suffered with it for many years before she died several years ago, and we tried everything we could find and nothing seemed to help her. I've had (idiopathic) symptoms for years, and two years ago was diagnosed with it - and I am not diabetic. It really is a horrific, depressing thing to have, with the chronic pain that just does not ease up. Ever. The only thing I have found recently that "seems" to help so far is Alpha-Lipoic Acid, 600 mg a day. It has by no means cleared it up, but seems to have calmed the symptoms when taken every, single day. This book mentions it, but does not have much of an opinion of it. I've bought and tried practically every topical "aid" I could find, and nothing really helps topically - for me. So, this book is expensive, has 100 pages of actual reading, and doesn't have much to offer someone like me who has been searching for years and is just simply wishing for some help. If you are reading this, you - or someone you know probably has Peripheral Neuropathy. I'm sorry..

Only source like this I've found
Book is short and to-the-point, quite good. I haven't seen anything similar for patients, in that it is written by a neurologist and covers everything that would be discussed with a patient in the doctor's office by a capable and conscientious specialist. I found it interesting to learn how the doctor is thinking during the examination and deciding what tests are needed, and when interpreting the results.

Concise information
It was interesting to read from a medical professionals point of view. You can learn information that your doctor doesn't take the time to tell you.

Very informative
Complex topic made understandable to non-medical person. Hopefully provided detail to influence spouse to get further testing to determine if what he has is Neuropathy. Not happy with physician or neurologist he visited so I must take charge.

Would be a good book for a carer to read but being in the early stages I found it frightening because it seems to suggest you will eventually end up fully disabled
