Used as a prop only
Don't plan on reading the book. Bought a cool Yoda book end that makes it look like Yoda is using the force to hold up book(s) and this book was a perfect item for the prop.

The Best Version of Star Wars Ever Produced -
" An adaptation for Radio in 13 parts" "Expanded" is an understatement - it's quite a bit longer than the source movies— as this version of Star Wars is nearly Six hours long!!!!!!Consequently, they include several scenes that were either cut from the films or entirely new.For example - in Episode Two - "Points of Origin", Leia uses the Tantive IV to smuggle medical supplies to Rebel forces on Ralltiir, and learns about the Death Star plans - acquiring them from Rebels on Toprawa, ( as originally conceived - NOT like the Disney revised Rogue One ) and we get Luke's home life as he interacting with Biggs and his friends on Tatooine - then witnesses him watching the battle between Tantive IV and the ISD Devastator. ( Which is basically the original missing 1st reel from the film ) And so much much more ..... The voice talent is some of the best and each actor brings a sense of excitement their role, making it easy to get swept up in the show. Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels reprised their roles as Luke and C-3PO respectively - and the rest of replacement actors are all top rate - even though it takes a minute to get used to someone else playing Vader - as Jones's shoes are hard to fill ( Brock Peters take was slightly different ) - as some of the replacement voice actors didn't watch the film version ( This was recorded in 1980). John William's expert score is also woven into the collection ( along w/ all of Ben Burtt’s original & irreplaceable sound effects ) both of which serve to brace and perfectly enhance the already well-written dialog. The Narration is kept to a minimum - used only at the opening and closing credits of each episode. STAR WARS never sounded richer or better. ( Well - truth be told - this Mp3 version is not as crisp or as sweet sounding as the non-compressed standard issue CD's) but all the extra's here are nice.

The Force Awakens Within Your MInd
Close your eyes and let the movie screen of the imagination take over. This is Star Wars as though you were there. Expands on the movie without becoming overdone. You get the scenes from the novel that should have been in the movie and superb voice acting and sound effects that immerse you in the rich environment Lucas (back when he hadn't succumbed to hubris). created to such worthy acclaim.Creating a universe people actually *lived* in is his greatest accomplishment and for that he can be forgiven episodes I, II, and III. :0If you love the original Star Wars and haven't heard this, get it right now. You won't regret it. There are moments and movies that define a generation and this is one of those movies.

Before the Star Wars Special Editions..."a theatre of the imagination"
"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."The story of "Star Wars," the epic film saga created by George Lucas, has been told in many different ways over the years since the first film captivated audiences around the world in 1977. Books, comics, video games and more have all furthered "the adventures of Luke Skywalker" beyond their origins from a work of classic cinema. One of the most entertaining versions of the Saga is the "Star Wars Original Radio Drama," an audio retelling of the Original Trilogy: the first installment, based on the film that came to be called "Episode IV: A New Hope," premiered on National Public Radio in 1981. Over 13 half hour episodes, this unique interpretation of Mr. Lucas' mythic movie fantasy involved radio listeners in a way that was old and new at the same time."Star Wars" remains one of the most exciting visual film experiences ever made so the challenge of recreating such an eye-catching adventure for radio was a demanding one. Fortunately, the vision Mr. Lucas had for his otherworldly film encompassed not just the sites of his far away galaxy but its sounds as well. Sound designer Ben Burt realized a wealth of audio effects for "Star Wars," from the scream of an Imperial Tie Fighter streaking through space, to the hum of "Ben" Kenobi's light saber, "a nobler weapon for a more civilized age;" and all of his memorable work is used to dramatic effect in the radio drama. Just as importantly, the Academy Award winning music of composer John Williams is also utilized to once again compliment the action and emotional power of the story of "Star Wars."Original movie cast members Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels reprised their film roles of Luke Skywalker and C-3PO.But the real triumph of the "Star Wars Original Radio Drama" is its rich expansion of the tale of Luke Sywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. These are characters who became beloved to fans of the movie and the radio version of their adventures offers those fans the chance get a deeper perspective of their exploits even as it relates the same film story. Over its 6 hours, the radio drama showcases much that would become famous in "Star Wars" legend: Luke's relationship with Biggs Darklighter, his best friend on Tatooine (a character heavily edited out of the original film); Princess Leia's earliest ties to the growing rebellion against the tyrannical galactic Empire and her mission to retrieve the plans to the Death Star; Han Solo's troubles with Jabba the Hut and his seedy underworld henchmen (or hench-sentients), plus more of the comedic highjinks of R2-D2 and C-3PO. All this and more is thrillingly written into this well known story by novelist Brian Daley, a talented science fiction writer who wrote one of the earliest "Star Wars" prose novels, "Han Solo at Star's End," published in 1979 (and part of a book trilogy that also included 1979's "Han Solo's Revenge," and 1980's "Han Solo and the Lost Legacy"). Due to its episodic structure, the radio drama also takes full advantage of "Star Wars'" old fashioned movie serial inspiration, giving each of its 13 parts an exciting or tantalizing cliffhanger ending that only added another dimension to its listening experience. Even without the imaginative imagery of Industrial Light and Magic, this audio account of the cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil is still a story that will enthrall those who listen to it.This 2014 release of the entire nearly 6 hour production is in the MP3 format which allowed all 13 episodes to be recorded on a single compact disk, in contrast to the drama's earlier release in 1993 which featured the audio adventure in a 7 CD boxed set. This edition also includes "The Making of the Radio Drama" audio documentary which was previously only available on "The Complete Star Wars Trilogy: Original Radio Drama Limited Edition" CD release of 1996. It also features a series of promotional ads for the radio drama, a behind the scenes booklet and a Tops trading card, part of a series inspired by the radio production. This is a wonderful experience for the listening senses and comes with this "Star Wars" fan's highest recommendation! May the Force be with you as you enjoy it...always!

Meh
When it comes to Disney, it’s as average as they can get.

Movie -> Book
I've been a Star Wars fan for as long as I can remember. When I say fan, I mean I have watched and grown up with the movies - the prequels mind you - but have loved both trilogies in their own ways. Therefore, I recently purchased this book with high hopes and expectations. This is one of those deals where the book was ALMOST as good as the movie. I would not say it was better. It was nice to have viewed the movie first because it allowed me to picture the characters and know exactly what was going on. The nice thing about the book, however, was the different perspective and dimension from the movie, in that you can see into the character's heads and know what they are thinking. The novel, like the movie, follows the adventures of the protagonist, Luke Skywalker. It is a fairly accurate representation of the movie, however, having been written before the finalized movie, has some discrepancies in details. It is an incredibly easy read, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and wouldn't mind reading it again and again for years to come.

Ok but not great due to inaccuracies in info.
Don't get me wrong the story is great and it's good to see the book in hardcover BUT the info for it is a bit misleading in my opinion.1. When it said complete with the films original artwork I thought it meant there would be additional pictures inside the book, not just a front and back cover picture!2. This is quite misleading as well-From the Inside FlapLuke Skywalker was a twenty-year-old who lived and worked on his uncle's farm on the remote planet of Tatooine...and he was bored beyond belief. He yearned for adventures that would take him beyond the farthest galaxies. But he got much more than he bargained for....There is NO inside flap as it doesn't have a dust jacket!Minor quibbles I know for such a great story but the force isn't strong with this one in my eyes, and there's nothing really SPECIAL about it for a 40th Anniversary book.

NOT AT ALL WHAT WAS EXPECTED
While description says "complete with the film's original artwork", one may think there would be additional pictures inside the book... How naive !The "film's original artwork" only refers to the cover and to it only ! No picture inside, only the novelization we already know with - maybe - some rewriting. So this is very disapointing, even if still enjoyable, I guess, for those who, unlike myself, didn't already own the original edition.

Better with a dust jacket
Rereading the classic novelization takes ne back and definitely stands up the test of time. It's Star Wars in its orginal, it's always going to.As much as I really like the anniversary version, I can't help but think it would be a lot better if it came with a dust jacket and is probably the only reason I've not give it 5 stars.Fingers crossed the other movie novelizations get a new printing in a similar format though.

SW: ANH - the novel
I first read this perhaps 37 years ago. That may have been the young reader version. I think I had both. This is pure SW, with joy and brio. But it is also not written very well and the author uses words to show his ability with a thesaurus, but that doesn't necessarily make the story better, more accessible or flow easily.

They were in the wrong place at the wrong time, naturally they became heroes
What new can be said about the Star Wars novelisation that hasn't been said before? There's not a lot to be honest, I first read this when it originally came out and to re-read it again is a joy. Transport yourself back once more to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away
