The diameter of the hole is about 1.65 inch(4.2CM)

Q: How do you find the beginning of the thread?

I usually find it tucked under another thread, usually about mid-way down the spool. I just flick my fingernail back & forth over the threads a few times and it will pop out.

Q: Are there 40 or 15 colors in this set? I find the title a bit confusing.

been so long since I got this but I think it is 15 and there is different sets that would equal 40 if you got them all. I use to lock in my crochet threads when crocheting so they don't come out and like the colors I chose that don't show. Good buy when needing many colors
