Q: What are the full dimensions of this piece when upright/in use?

When fully upright, the height is 22" from floor to top step. I put it flush against the bed, and the end of the wooden bar fits under the bed. The bottom step extends about 2 1/2 feet from the bed.

Q: Would this work to use sideways at the end of the bed instead of directly facing? We don't have enough clearance for it to be direct to the bed.

I have put it parallel to the bed, and perpendicular. Works both ways. Just takes a day or two to show them how to use the steps. Very sturdy.

Q: What is the length of these dog stairs.

The length of the side rails is 32 inches

Q: My dog is 40 lbs, about the size of a beagle and likes to lay down looking out the window. Would she be able to lay on the top step?

I can tell you the stairs are very sturdy,but I am not sure the steps are wide enough for a 40lb. dog to lie down on. Sorry, wish I could be more help.
