Fantastic cold pack for knee. Stays cold a very long time.
This is the best cold pack for knees and I have tried a few trying to get one that easily wraps around the joint and provides cold to all the areas. It is very easy to apply and provides cold above, below and around the knee joint. It also stays cold much longer than any other one that I have used.Another strong point is that you can purchase extra cold packs at a very good price without having to purchase the entire compression device. I had a total knee on the left and used the device they give you in the hospital but this works much better and I purchased it and 2 extra cold packs for when I have my right knee done as it will do a much better job and is much, much easier to use.

I like this product!!!!!
I had a total knee replacement about eight weeks ago. I am still in unbearable pain, so I was looking for something that might help and make things a bit easier for me. I live alone and I have no help. had bone on bone in my left knee andI have bone on bone in my right knee. The surgeon is already ready to do the surgery on the right knee. I don't know if I want to do another surgery on my knee, as this is so painful!!! I think I will just be in pain forever because knee surgery has been too painful for me. I have had two surgeries on the left knee in the past 2 years. The pain is too unbearable. So I was looking for an ice pack that was easy to use to help with pain relief. I saw this one and I thought I would give it a try. I got it right away and I placed the gel pack in the freezer. After about 90 minutes, I took it out and put it all together. I put it on my left knee and compressed it to my knee. It was awesome!!! I could walk around with it on my knee/leg. I made lunch and sat down to eat. The cold felt so good on my knee. I was thinking about getting another one, but the reason that I only gave 4 stars is because it is a wonderful product, but the gel pack doesn't stay cold too long and that is the reason why I am not sure if I want to get another one of these. I am constantly putting it back in the freezer to get more cold to the knee. But other than that, it is a very nice item. It velcros the gel pack inside the knee wrap and it velcros to your knee/leg. That is very convenient. I just really wish that the gel pack would stay cold longer.

A must for Total Knee Replacement recovery!
So I am now 2 weeks and 2 days post TKR. At the hospital I used a very unwieldy cold compression unit that was attached to an ice water source unit that required someone else to manage it. As soon as I got home, I started using this knee “painsoother”. It fit very comfortable with the Velcro straps around the new knee joint. What made this most beneficial was the air bladder built into the wrap that provided a well distributed cold application all around the knee. The compress stayed well chilled for the amount of time I was prescribed to use it( 20 mins on...3-4x a day). When I used it I put a dish towel between my skin and the compress and therefore used it more like 7-8 times a day. The cold definitely keeps the pain under control, but, as importantly, also helps to keep the swelling down. My recovery has been amazing, my flexion and extension has me at a 4-6 week position. I attributed this on large part to the facility and ease of using this compress( vs wraps with ice cubes or even the machine the hospital wanted to give me).For those with future planned Total Knee Replacement, I definitely recommend ordering this prior so as to have on hand for when you get home. 7/30/2020... So now I have the dubious opportunity of adding to my previous review, because I just went through another knee replacement surgery. I, fortunately, had a den in the basement that I turned into my temporary convalescent room. This time I preordered two more I’ve packs, so I had 4 ice packs that I could rotate for use. In addition, knowing I wanted my ice packs cold and for use as soon as I needed them, I bought a small(college dorm) size fridge that I put on a low table within arms reach. This fridge’s sole purpose was to freeze the bags, and when the dial was cranked up( not even all the way), the bag I took out was always extremely cold!., and they were not even in the small freezer section. Water bottles would freeze if left in too long( so these small fridges work great for these ice bags. So now I was set for the surgery, which went well again. At the hospital, this time they had an ice machine that worked the way the older model I had the first time , but now the water circulated. The key word is “water”. Yes, the container had ice and water mixed, but it was the cold water that moved around, not ice. At the hospital, this was good, but you had to depend on someone to come in, change the water, add ice, and there was always a loss in pain management momentum. When I got home, I immediately switched to my pain soother wrap. Both in the hospital with their machine and at home with the painsooother it is advised to put a towel between your knee and the wrap to avoid any type of “tissue burn”. At the hospital the skin, of course, was more sensitive having gone through major surgery, at home the skin now is already starting to heal. The ice bath doesn’t really pass ice around the knee, only cold water. To me, it worked to a point, but did not have the effectiveness of putting something almost frozen close to the affected area. One thing I did this time at home was to keep a wide ace wrap with zero compression from top of knee to bottom. This obviated the need for the nuisance towel applied before the wrap that would sometimes shift it’s position during use causing rewrapping. It also had a small amount of friction by its surface that made the wrap stay in place so much better. The last thing it did was to create closer, more intimate contact between the wrap and the knee. I will apply the ice pack thusly without any concern of the ice affecting the skin, because, even as you are applying it, it is starting to thaw, and here I am 11 days out having used this wrap technique almost 18/7.At night, I do fall back to the other ice machine from the hospital, because even though it is not as effective as the paimsoother for me, I don’t want to wake up to change the ice pack, nor rely on someone else. At this point, I am only on OTC analgesics , and I 100% attribute this to the way the pain soother controlled so well my post op swelling at home. I am still having PT done at home, having the ice pack in place just before the therapist comes, and immediately placing it after, has been the best pain management tool! Good luck to anyone needing to go through this.

Awkward
For me, It was clumsy to use as the pump & hose stays attached. I did not experience any improvement over a regular ice wrap. It also does not go around my entire knee.

Don't buy anything else
I used a rented Game Ready icer after my recent total-knee replacement for the first two weeks. I then switched to this Pain Soother which I had purchased in advance. I must say that it does a great job, actually just as good as the $3,200 Game Ready. The secret appears to be the compression. Of course, compression is important in its own right, bit in the Pain Soother, it is what keeps the cold packs closely approximated to the joint and molded around the joint. It cools only the knee, not the surrounding soft tissue, but it does it quite well. The gel cold packs are the other essential ingredient here. I've used products like this before, and the shortcomings are that they don't stay cold. Those in the Pain Soother, though, stay very cold for the entire 30 min icing period. They'll even work for 45 minutes. I thik the reason they stay so cold is the thick bladder of air insulation all around them provided by the compression component.I'd strongly recommend that for post-surgical care, you purchase at least two cold packs in addition to the one that comes with the Pain Soother because you'll be icing several times a day, and you'll need to rotate the packs in and out of the freezer. For buyers who intend to use it after sports workouts, the single pack may be sufficient.
