Wonderful Story
I'm not much of a writer. So just know that this is a very enjoyable book. If you like the Phantom, you will like this story. I wish that I'd found it as a child. But all I knew was from the newspaper comics page. That was enough. But now I have read the story behind the story. Maybe you should too?

A good nostalgic story
I had read this book many years ago. I still have a dog eared.paperback.copy that I picked up at a yard sale in the late 70's somewhere. I still remembered the story and wanted to read it again.

After Tarzan, the Phantom is my favorite jungle as well as the first and best of the masked "superheroes." I really enjoyed Falk's more detailed backstory!

Good background info
I enjoyed it very much... a couple of typos, but a fun (and something that filled in some background info) tale.I will be trying to get #2, and all 15 at some point.

Excellent origin novelization
This is an excellent novelization of the origin of The Phantom, by Lee Falk himself. It tells the history of the Phantom line, some of Phantom #20, and the whole youth of Phantom #21. There are too many typos, but it's still worth having for any real fan of this comic strip which is still going strong after 81 years.

Great pulp novel
Nice throw back to the days when hero's were good to the core and didn't need to have tragic things happen to motivate them. Great character, solid story telling and easy read. Highly recommend.

The Ghost That Still Walks
While it annoying that the text isn't Justified, it is good of Hermes Press to finally give the world a reprint of the 15 Phantom novels, starting with this first one on the origin of the hero and his lineage. This is old school pulp hero goodness centered on a coming of age tale with a lot of good morals passed down from father to son. It's hard to believe this was released in the '70s as it is clearly of a much older time. And it shows. If you like superheroes, or are interested in The Phantom, you should definitely start here.

The novel is based on the comic strips!
It would have been good if the novel would have started off with something about the author's background. For decades Lee Falk created these stories of a masked man who, for hundreds of years, fought crime on the high seas and elsewhere. Of course it was generational but the notion of a ghost who walks, a man who cannot die was born. Lee took his Phantom from stories about criminals let loose in the jungle that had to be apprehended to quirky tales of mechanical wonders and of princes that ruled their lands with an iron fist. Lee always wanted to be a novelist and not just a comic strip writer and he apparently got his wish.
