RAM Mounts Track Ball with T-Bolt Attachment RAP-B-354U-TRA1 with B Size 1" Ball

I used a VERY LARGE assortment of RAM products on my latest project and every component was very high quality, though also quite costly. If you want stuff you know will last, and will WORK. I recommend this brand. I decided to review this particular item because of how well it worked for my particular application - adding numerous attachments (cell phone, tablet, multiple fans and more) to a professional level sim-racing cockpit. (If you are unsure what that is, google TrakRacer TR160 cockpit) Although I have been riding motorcycles/motocross my entire life, I did not use these products for that purpose. I recently built my second cockpit for sim racing using TrakRacers TR160 Aluminum Profile kit and these mounts were AMAZING. The beauty of using aluminum-profile for a project is it has channels to hold everything together with maximum solidity, as well as giving you endless ways to mount accessories. It's used in an endless number of other applications that need solid framework put together in a custom way - like 3D printers. THESE RAM MOUNT TRACK BALLS WITH T-Bolt Attachment allow you to easily put a 1" ball mount anywhere on an "80/20" rig, or any Aluminum Profile rig with channels. The T-Bolt attachment is thin enough to make into a normal channel without having to slide it in from one of the ends, which are typically non-accessible once you've bolted everything together. No need to take anything apart. Simply loosen the internal T-nut so you have enough clearance to get it inside the channel and twist it, then while pulling up to hold the t-bolt firmly inside the channel, simply turn the ball mount to tighten it up. This will add a mount for any 1" based ball-mount attachments you could need.

I purchased this with the intent to mount my Garmin EchoMap Plus 44cv Fish Finder/Chartplotter on my kayak. This Ram Track Ball would mount to my installed track, support a 4" Ram arm with my fish finder on it. Which should be no problem. Issue: Once I had set everything up, the whole setup started to pivot and slide down, like this Ram Track Ball was greased up or something (And I tightened it real hard). To make a long story short, you'll notice there's a opening or hole at the top of this Ram Track Ball. THAT's the problem. When you tighten on this Ram Track Ball, that opening/hole allows the ball to compress too much, thus providing very low grip. What the heck!? Solution: Fill the hole with something solid. I had some sculpting putty lying around, so I carefully packed in the hole, let it set, then tried mounting everything again. It worked!. This allowed the ball NOT to compress and allow a very firm grip. I'm sure you can use whatever you have that's solid to fill it, even a shaved down piece of wood. Just to be clear, RAM's other balls are solid and does not have an opening or hole on top. I'm surprised this hasn't been a larger issue with RAM or anyone else.

I have used RAM mounts for years, for all sorts of equipment. But most recently I put together an aluminum profile simulator chassis, and needed a new way to mount button boxes and displays… although this does not advertise to work in this situation after searching for a similar solution i found this to be my best bet and it works flawlessly in my 80/20 aluminum profile. IT gob holds firm with zero necessary tools or additional parts assuming you already have the arms and product mount needed to complete the package. It is designed to absorb shock so it does not hold everything perfectly still, which shouldn’t be a problem for most applications.
