Great magnifying lamp!
I really love the Fulcrum magnifying lamp! It stands nicely on its weighted base, the light is so bright I didn't even realize that I didn't have my floor lamp on last night, and it has a very large magnifying area with perfect magnification to keep the surface of the lamp a good 7" from my 18-count crosstitch - plenty of room to pull my needle and thread through. (I saw where some reviewers felt the base wasn't heavy enough for stability, but I found it plenty heavy. Sure, you do better to hold the pole while you adjust the neck of the magnifier, but that's no big deal.) The little bifocal lense has come in handy, too. I like the way the base is designed, so that the pole comes up from one end - I can slip the base under my chair so the neck easily reaches my work area and at the perfect height. The flexible neck works very well for positioning the head perfectly; it feels sturdy and I always handle adjustments gently, so I see no reason it shouldn't last. The shorter poles screw together tightly and don't wobble at the connection points, and the directions were clear enough (it's mostly intuitive anyway, but be careful to follow each step; there is something that you might not think about). The ONLY thing I'm bummed about is that the LED lights are not replaceable, but at this price, if I get even "just" 50,000 hours (that's almost 6 years of continuous use, so...) from them, it will be worth it - but only if I can find this lamp again when the time comes to replace. Hmm, maybe I should just get another now. *One warning: be SURE that the head of the lamp is facing down before you turn it on, and don't let it shine directly in your eyes at anytime (led lights are basically small lasers). I didn't notice which way I had it pointing when I set it up and hit the on button, but luckily wasn't looking right at it!

Surprisingly stable
I almost didn’t order this lamp because it seemed kind of flimsy from the reviews, but I’m so glad I did! I’m not sure wether the manufacturer changed something or people weren’t reading the assembly instructions, but the lamp pole does screw into the base and you can pick it up and move it. The base is also much heavier than I expected. Even if you flip the lamp backwards (not sure why you would do this, but several reviewers seemed to desire this feature) it is still relatively stable, though obviously you’ve messed up the center of gravity so I wouldn’t leave it that way. It assembled easily with no tools in under 5 mins. I do recommend reading the instructions as it is easier if you do it in the order they lay out. The magnifying acrylic piece is perfect for the stitch work I do (for fellow cross-stitchers the reference fabric in the video is 25 ct linen) and the light is sufficient. It is not “surface of the sun” bright, but enough to make your work easily visible. I also like the gooseneck and handle combo that makes adjustments easy. Cons: The base is too thick to slide under the side of most recliners. Also, the power cord is clearly meant for backup power and will likely not withstand heavy use so I anticipate I will have to replace the cord or power it with 3 D batteries as it seems the designers intended. Overall, a really functional lamp. Well put together and well designed for its intended use.

Great Size to Use From a Chair
I got this for my wife. She spends a lot of time on her toes grooming them. This is perfect for that when sitting in a chair. The main magnifier is large, well illuminated, and has adequate magnification for most tasks. We use it with the 3 D cell batteries instead of using the plug in supply as that is much more convenient in the bathroom. Those heavy batteries in the base also help prevent it from tipping over. My wife likes the magnifier. By the way when assembling the unit, the upright pipes are male threaded on one end - with a temporary shipping plastic ring over the male threaded end that you remove before assembly. The bottom pipe screws into the base - no tools required, just good hand tightness. I point this out because one reviewer thought it just “pushed in” which would not be very secure. The good: (1) Perfect size to use seated with the magnifier on the floor. (2) large magnifier and good lighting. (3) Easy to use. (4) Uses D cells which should last a long time. The bad: Nothing really Could Use Improvement: The little inset in the magnifier that provides higher magnification is quite small and almost useless for most tasks because it is so small. I would prefer either a larger inset magnifier, or a larger magnifier that swings in and out, or just eliminate the little inset magnifier.

Mom Depends on This Light
My 86 year old mom has tried multiple hand held magnifiers over the years, some lighted, some not, in her efforts to keep reading after a diagnosis of dry macular degeneration. We decided to try this lamp due to the combination of LED lights, gooseneck positioning, and the strength of the magnifier. In the month since the light was delivered my mom's life has expanded. She loves this light. With her hands free, she can work her large-print crosswords puzzles and is even reading magazines again. We are thrilled with the light and are so grateful that her quality of life is better because of it. Our one wish for improvement with this light would be for a more weighty base for stability. November 28, 2010 I thought I'd update my original review some 18 months after we originally purchased this terrific light. Mom still loves her light, in fact, Thanksgiving day I overheard her tell a friend that it was her life saver. We've had no troubles with the light since it was purchased. The weight of the base hasn't been an issue for Mom and that is surprising because she is so wobbly. I saw that it was on sale today and am thinking of buying it for my husband who also has vision troubles. I truly recommend this light to anyone needing hands-free lighted magnification. August, 2012 Another update. Mom (now 89) still loves her light and uses it every day. No troubles with the LED lights, the base, or the gooseneck. Everything is still working perfectly. I'm so glad we purchased the light. September, 2014 Latest on Mom's light. This light is like the ever-ready bunny. I keeps ticking along. Mom, now 91, continues to use the light every day. Still no troubles with the LED lights, the base, the plug, or the gooseneck. This practically perfect light is the best thing I've purchased for Mom.

Worth the purchase but the pole easily separates from base, which is annoying
This is a good product and worth the purchase. I gave it 3 stars overall, because the base separates from the pole when it is moved. There is no screw or other fastener. So when my mother tries to move the lamp, she naturally grabs the pole to slide it over. Since the base is weighted to keep the center of gravity low (an excellent thing) the pole comes out and so does the wiring. It’s not a big problem to feed the wiring back into the pole and put it back in the base for me. However, seniors would have a very difficult time doing this, because the base is heavy and requires a person to spend a few minutes bent over near the ground. Perhaps I missed something in assembly, but I have studied the parts and instructions thoroughly without a solution

decent light with major design flaw
the light and magnifier are ok and work pretty much as you expect. it puts out a reasonable amount of light from multiple points, so you don't see lots of shadows on things you're looking at. it has a *major* design flaw, however. the vertical pole has merely "rests" in the base. it is not attached. when the light is sitting in one place, it works ok. when you go to move the light, whether it be to take it from one room to another, to vacuum under it, or merely to move it closer to where you are sitting, the natural way to do this is to grasp the pole to lift the lamp. if you try this, you end up holding the top of the lamp in your hand with the base sitting on the floor and a wire dangling between the two parts. you then have to "reassemble" the lamp by carefully tucking the wire back into the pole, and re-inserting the pole into the base. they designed it to run either off D batteries or off an AC adaptor. so the light would be ideal for use around the house, allowing you to take it where it's need to work on a repair project here, a sewing project over there, etc. however, the design flaw pretty much kills the ability to move the lamp around easily. in my view, this is a catastrophically dumb design - there are any number of ways the could have designed the lamp to avoid this problem.

Great lamp for crocheting while I watch TV with the family in a semi-dark room.
I purchased this lamp after purchasing and returning one that should have attached to a table. The table one would not remain secure when moved the 360 degrees described, so I returned it. I found this one and ordered it. It arrived quickly, (on a Friday) but made a hissing, high pitched sound that bothered me, my kids, and our dog. My husband who spends time around computers all day and is deaf in one ear couldn't hear the noise. I attempted to use it Saturday, but became frustrated and stressed by the sound, so I asked for a replacement. It arrived on Sunday. My son suggested we try the AC adapter from the new one rather than unpacking the whole lamp. It worked. Now, there is no more hissing/high pitched sound. It is perfectly quiet. So, I'm returning a brand new lamp that I didn't even need to unpack except for the the AC adapter. I love how quickly the return for the first lamp and the exchange for this one occurred. I also like that each time, the item was picked up at my door. This lamp stays cool and actually feels like it is giving off a little coolness. It is the perfect height for sitting in a recliner and crocheting. I can lower it to look through the magnifier, or raise it up to only use it for the light. The lamp can be held low enough that it does not reflect onto the TV and bother the rest of the family even in a semi-dark room. Yes, the cord is long as others have mentioned. I just folded it on one end and inserted it into the post and then folded another section and inserted in another section. It is a bit tight but works. Also, at the instruction of one of the reviews, I did make sure to screw the post into the foot until it stopped turning. I can lift the entire lamp from the top post to move it and it is light weight enough to easily move, but the foot does keep it stead enough if I keep the larger section in the same direction that the lamp is bent (see the listed photo). I will update this review if I have any problems, but right now it appears to be the perfect lamp for my needs.

Light stopped working.- updated after replacement.
Light stopped working after 7 months. The light just flashes when plugged in and power switch doesn’t work. Prior to this I thought the lamp worked well. Update: After contacting the manufacturer, they sent me a new lamp. I was pleasantly surprised by the responsive and friendly service. Changing my rating to 5 stars. The new lamp is working great. It provides nice bright adjustable light and the magnifying lens is good quality.
