THE DESERTER (Scott Brodie)

The Nelson DeMille touch is there
But I feel this tried too hard to imitate the inimitable John Corey and that led to a little bit of a downer in places.Nevertheless, a good deb seeut effort from Alex DeMille, worth a read!

Breezy tale
Honestly after By The Rivers of Babylon, none of DeMille books impressed me till this one. A breezy story of a couple of CID agents out to get an army deserter hiding in Venezuela. Sub-plots of CIA connections of one of the agents and CIA-backed genocide in Afghanistan the author(s) stay away from making it too dark and serious. The humour level is fantastic throughout right till the end. DeMille is not convincing on the motivation of the CID agents to put their lives in grave danger nonchalantly considering their orders were just to locate and capture only if possible. DeMille fails to convince on that front. Same for the end when their escape from captivity and capture of the deserter seems just too easily done and the book seems hurriedly wrapped up in the end. Still, a genuine page-turner and fast-paced and humour-filled caper tale for adventure buffs.

Disappointed
Very poor.I'm fairly convinced that this novel was mostly the work of the son Kyle. It was not, in my opinion, the work of the father Nelson. It just did not come near any of the other Nelson DeMille's terrific books, which I have read (in many cases twice) all of and thoroughly enjoyed except perhaps for "The Cuban Affair" which I also suspect had a lot of input from the son Kyle! To be fair I feel that the son will improve as he writes more novels - sure hope so!!The father Nelson has provided me with some of the best fiction reads I've ever had - I'm sure going to miss him.

Very disappointing.
Quite a good entertaining read - but - overall I was disappointed with this book. The cause of my disappointment was the main dysfunctional character Scott Brodie. Never mind that he appeared dysfunctional, his antics were totally frustrating and unbelievable of a U.S.Army Chief Warrant Officer. This could have been an excellent book but unfortunately the main character spoiled the overall effect,

Really good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it maintained my interest right to the end. Scott was an interesting character, typical of a DeMille main man, and the chemistry between him and Maggie, also a great character, was enjoyable and fun to read about. There were a few pretty dramatic scenes and some exciting moments throughout the story and it has my recommendation.

Another superb thriller from Nelson DeMille
Nelson DeMille's 'Up Country' is my favourite book of all time and his new one 'The Deserter' is right up there in terms of quality and good old entertainment. The two books follow similar paths, a wisecracking unorthodox male lead character is given the seemingly impossible task to locate someone in hostile territory. In both books, he teams up with glamorous females who often get the upper hand and seem to know more than he does. The Deserter could be DeMille's take on Conrad's Heart of Darkness. He wrote the book with his son but like the recent Lee Child book, you don't really see much difference in style or quality. Forget some of the disappointing reviews about The Deserter elsewhere, download it on your Kindle, it is excellent.

This is a problem
Ive read approx 100 pages of this book i usually do not write a review until ive finished , but i am making an exception on this occasion. The story is terrific, 5 stars. The printing is beyond awful, you need eyes like an army sniper to read this for any length of time. Amazon, you need to make sure purchasers know this is really small print . AMAZON zero stars.
