BETTER, STRONGER, FASTER
The third season of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN is a good example of why the show was so popular in the 70s, and why its legacy endures to this day. Taken at a glance, 6-MIL is nothing impressive. You've got a series lead with the acting range of a statue, storylines that vary from the pedestrian to the preposterous, and a fictional organization, the OSI, which is so riddled with spies and traitors it's hard to believe it stayed in business for a single week, much less all the years of this show's run. But THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN is more than the sum of its parts, and season three proves it.The conceit behind the show is simple. Steve Austin (Lee Majors) is an air force test pilot who was horribly injured in a crash. The head of the Office of Scientific Intelligence, Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson) saw in the disaster an opportunity to create the perfect secret agent using bionic technology -- cybernetic prosthetics that give Austin immense speed, strength and visual acuity. The rebuilt Austin goes from week to week carrying out the risky missions assigned to him by his "pal" Goldman. Along the way he encounters spies, gangsters, thieves, terrorists, mad scientists, and, well, some other very exotic stuff that might just strain your suspension of disbelief a li'l bit. The show's second conceit is perhaps more interesting than the first: Austin, though a career military man and a secret agent, despises guns and generally refuses to touch them, even when it would be to his benefit. He'll beat your butt, but he'll never kill anyone if it's humanly possible to avoid it. This is a refreshing touch in an American action hero.Season Three opens with a two-parter which brings back the Bionic Woman, Jamie Sommers (the effervescent Lindsay Wagner), Steve's old fiance who was presumed dead and has lost most of her memory. These episodes are a pilot of sorts for THE BIONIC WOMAN, and set the stage for various cross-overs between the two shows. Steve has to go through a lot of emotional anguish and make a purely personal sacrifice which cements him as the lonely man of honor. Following this, some of my favorites from the season are:"The Price of Liberty" -- a disgruntled former government bomb expert has kidnapped the Liberty Bell and rigged it with explosives. Steve must find a way to disarm the bombs and bring the Bell back to Philadelphia."The Song and Dance Spy" -- Steve's old buddy John (Sonny Bono) is suspected of being a spy, and Steve must either prove his innocence or expose him as a traitor."The Deadly Test" -- Erik Estrada guest stars as an arrogant Arab test pilot who has been the subject of several assasination attempts: Steve must mentor him in the sky and protect him on the ground."Target in the Sky" - Steve goes undercover at a logging camp in hopes of finding some stolen missile technology."The Bionic Criminal" - The "other" bionic man, the unstable Barney Hiller (the excellent Monte Markham), returns and wreaks more havoc when Rudy Wells and Oscar Goldman rather stupidly decide to restore his bionic strength."The Blue Flash" - another undercover assignment for Steve, this one at a dockyard, has him balancing his assignment with his desire to protect a woman and her kid from the same thugs he's investigating."Clark Templeton O'Flaherty" -- Louis Gossett, Jr. guest stars as a morally ambiguous agent from a rival agency (OGA: what does it stand for? I still don't know!) who tangles with Steve during an investigation of stolen secrets."The Bionic Badge" - Steve becomes an LAPD cop to suss out the motives in a string of electronics thefts that may have taken place with police connivance, and befriends the suspected turncoat cop."Big Brother" - in what might have been a terribly sappy episode, Steve plays big bro to a troubled Latino kid from the slums, and tries to impart various life-lessons (not cheating at basketball is, interestingly enough, not one of them). On the other side, "The Secret of Bigfoot," a two-parter featuring Andre the Giant, is typica of some of the cornier, wierder, just plain out-there episodes of the show. Suffice to say a cybernetic bigfoot controlled by aliens hiding in a mountain is pretty damned silly even for a show whose target audience was probably below the age of 18. "One of Our Running Backs is Missing" also deteriorates into farce, ruining what could have been a good episode which features Dick Butkus and Carl Weathers. But in this season there are surprisingly few mediocre episodes and quite a few I didn't mention ("The Winning Smile," for example) are very good. One of the things I truly enjoy about Six-Mil is the fact that while Steve Austin is in many ways a cartoon hero -- fearless, unflappable, handsome, polite, loyal, kind to animals, etc., etc. -- he has a few flaws that make him approachable. The most delightful of these is the fact he is not above using bionic strength (or his enhanced eye) to cheat at sports or show up old athletic rivals; but he's also a touch vain about clothing and, for a military man, tends toward disobedience, much to the exasperation of Oscar Goldman, who he is forever hanging up on.In many ways, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN is dated as hell, and I don't mean in terms of fashion or technology. The hero, and the way he goes about his adventures (and the way he sings whenever Jamie Sommers is around) are cheesy and sometimes cringe-worthy by today's standards. Yet the underlying decency behind Austin's character and the very concept of the show itself -- the idea that yeah, super strength helps but it's character and decency that matter -- will never date in my eyes, and are part of what makes THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN so much fun.

Just as I remembered it!
Even though this is a region 2 set of DVDs, I would recommend it. Only a short time later did I find out that it had come out on Time/Life (for an extremely high price, I might add, though!). It was worth it, but if you can't afford it, this is a very good addition to any collection. The language is both in English and Italian; have no fear. If you are looking for a good cheap way to view this set, go to [...] They offer a region free DVD player for only $58! That rivals Walmart. Hee hee. The player has a converter in it, so no expensive PAL-to-NTSC and vice versa conversions. The precise URL for the player is here: [...] although there are plenty of others to choose from, as well. It is advertized as a "Philips DVD-3560 Region Code Free DVD Player". I found no quality problems and it was wonderful to view this season again on TV as I had remembered it as a child. As far as I knew at the time, there was no other place to buy the 3rd season. Wonderful show with wonderful values, I would highly recommend it to anyone. For those with deeper pockets (around $250.00, if I remember correctly), the entire show is available from Time-Life at: [...]|9820|six%20million%20man||S|b|6054121283&gclid=CL-Ymfyx96cCFZFoKgodeh-fsg. Actually, I see it costs $239.95. The extras are particularly wonderful with this product. Good luck, whatever you decide. But rest assured, the Italian version of season 3 in region 2 DVD is absolutely wonderful! Happy shopping and viewing!

When TV Was Original and Worth Watching
I could not wait for the Six Million Dollar Man to come out on DVD. Like most 40-50 year olds, this was my favorite series when growing up in the 70's. Sure the special effects are not all CGI and glossy like they are today, but they're not bad for the time and heaven knows even the worst stript and plot for TSMDM is ten times better than half of the sci-fi trash that is put out there now days. Lee Majors was made for the role and may be more assoicated with it than just about any actor could be with a role. I agree with most that season Two was probably better overall, but this is the first season we all got to see Steve Austin take on that other 70's icon "Bigfoot". That alone makes this five stars. Harve Bennett was on top of his game when producing this series and Richard Anderson as Oscar Goldman may be as famous for that role as Majors was with Austin. I will not bore you with episode lists and views on each one, but I will say if you love sci-fi and if you grew up in the 70's, this is a must buy not only for its excellent entertainment, but the trip down memory lane when TV was worth a darn.

'Worth a Million Dolllars'
Superb Series!Just purchased this season aswell as 4 & 5. Have to say so far I am liking everything about it.For some years now only the first 2 seasons were available to buy and now I have them all!!Firstly I much prefer the packaging in a strong sturdy plastic box rather than individual slim line cases in a flimsy card case.Secondly, I have noticed watching the first two episodes a much improved picture quality it is much clearer practically most of the little black spots and hairs flickering across the screen (you see on most older Videos and DVDs from the 70's) have gone, and even the colour has improved where as before when a scene changes to the next the colour would go an awfull yellow colour now this no longer happens. They certainly have done a good job cleaning this up.thirdly there are more special features found on a bonus disc which previous seasons didn't have. The aspect ratio is still 4.3 which doesn't bother me too much as i can slightly make this bigger without cutting to much into the picture.Overall 99% happy and fingers cross the picture and colour quality remains very good throughoutNB Don't know what previous reviews are on about my copies are in English / English Artwork not Italian and is regions 2 & 4and plays perfectly on my Panasonic Surround Sound 3D Blu ray player and never looked soo good!!
