A Look (back) at how our persception of Steroids came about?
This book doesn't really seem to be about Steroids, but the Olympics and how amateurism was abandoned, due to capitalism and desire for winners (cold war and nationalism). The war on steroids was apparently to replace the amateur with the clean non cheater ideal. The other topic was how the problem with steroids was exaggerated in the press based on distorted studies and an echo chamber of quoting those who quoted the original mis-reporting. He also briefly describes how this happen with marijuana , alcohol etc. (ie this has happened before). He then proposes legalization as safer etc. No where does he consider those who would not like to have to compete with those using these drugs. Nor does he describe any problems with steroid use. (He does suggest one read Testosterone Dreams - my next stop). Much how the NFL abuses pain killers etc. even while legal.EDIT:I checked out Testosterone Dreams, which covers much of the same ground as this book as far as athletes goes - in a briefer fashion. But it too, does not look at the long term effects of using Steroids in higher doses than is natural for extended periods. (I think Estrogen at normal levels for younger women was shown much later to have adverse effects on older women for instance). Of course if one googles one can find many adverse affects on sites like Mayo Clinic , WebMD, but I don't know if their sources are similar to the ones this author disputes.
