Rocks & Minerals (DK Handbooks)

Great guide got it for my boys (who are homeschooled) for their unit on rocks. My oldest loves rocks and has been looking them up all day!

This book is what it says it is. I have several rock, mineral and gem books and this is a good one.

Great book for rock collectors, however book arrived with bent corners.

pictures of the minerals are very nice.

Love this book it's got great pics of all kinds of rocks not just the pretty ones and great information.

My son, who is a rock enthusiast, says that this is the most informational book he has found on the subject.

Good pictures but really wanted it for identifying rocks on the beach and it doesn’t really help. If anyone knows of a good visual photographic guide to pebbles please let us know.

As an aspiring geologist, a rock/mineral guide is very important. This book contains high quality pictures that allow you to see the finest details of the rocks. There are also some rocks in this book that I have never heard of. In the first few pages, there is a brief introduction to rock formation, geological maps and guidelines for carrying out geological fieldwork.For each rock/mineral, it gives details about its formation, crystalline structure, Mohs hardness etc. However, some of the descriptions could do with a better description and maybe a diagram. When this is combined with a general geology book, you will have a lot of information at your fingertips.

I purchased this book for my youngest child. He is really into rocks. He found it really interesting and it fired his imagination. I think we have had to visit virtually every cave and mine in the country! The information is really detailed and thorough. There is a lot about the crystalline structure of each mineral, the hardness, and also the many tests that are specific to that particular mineral. I am sure this will help him if he goes on to study this sort of thing in secondary school. However, he is only in year 7. He can now talk quite knowledgably about rocks and minerals, and impresses people he talks to.

I bought this handbook as I have become a bit of a Geology 'geek' over the years and bought it as a sort of addition to my knowledge and to just read up on when I want to know more.It is packed full of everything you'd want/need to know about the most common rocks/minerals and gives a little bit of understanding for people who may not necessarily know as much as the average geologist might know.It is not necessarily a product for light-reading but definitely for someone who takes a keen interest in this area of knowledge.The book was delivered in the time expected and in perfect, shiney condition. It lives in my room, under my pillow in true geek-form!

Bought as a gift for my 12-year old nephew, who was fascinated with rocks. He loved it. Good introduction to the subject with lovely, clear photos.
