That is basically what the outside measurement of the box (8" x 6.5"). The door is just a little larger to cover the box (8.5" x 7.5"). The wall thickness of the box is 1/16". Hope this helps you out.

What's the best way to remove the knockouts without damaging the box? I'm afraid I'll break the box if I just try to pound it out.

I didn't have to remove any of the knockouts. They are designed to be removed, I believe prying out the ones you need to remove would be better than pounding, as it's plastic. I used it to house my yard sprinkler timer. Worked good for my application.

how high does the back plate stand? i.e. how much clearance is between it and the back of the box?

It is all one box. No separate back plate. The back plate is part of the box. There are just 4 keyhole holes for hanging the box on screws, bolts or whatever. It mounts flush to the wall. It is pretty sturdy. I think because of the pre drilled holes for mounting... they call it a back plate but it's all one box.
