This is a fine book: it is beautifully produced and printed by The Liberty Fund, and judiciously edited by Eugene Miller (that is to say, not over- or under-edited, neither obtrusive nor overly scant on commentary); it contains fascinating additional material such as Hume's brief account of his life and Adam Smith's letter on Hume's final days (both given a perfectly judged level of illumination by the editor), and, of course, many fascinating topics treated most incisively by this great philosopher. It must also be said, that these essays can be understood by the non-philosophical, such as myself, as they are written in a less formal (though no less attractive) style, free from the sometimes mystifying terms of formal philosophical argument. They are perhaps better described as essays of great wisdom than rigorous philosophy.

David Hume is the greatest essayist in the English language. This collection shows his significant contributions to economics and political theory as well as his more famous philosophical ideas.

Liberty Fund puts out some of the greatest works in affordable, high quality products. This work of Hume is absolutely terrific, and is my favorite Liberty Fund publication along with Lord Kames’s works. As one reviewer has noted, some of those criticizing this work are not referring to the Liberty Fund publication.
